Achieving Nearly Zero Energy Building (NZEB) standards by deep retrofitting existing buildings.

Description:

The proposed project is divided into two subprojects:

 SuperDATA: In this subproject will analyze data from buildings who have completed deep retrofits through the Superhomes program (more than 150 buildings in total), to have an evidence-based approach to determine the most cost-effective measures to achieve the New Nearly Zero Energy Buildings standard and identify the principal barriers.

RetroFAB: There will be a particular focus on homes were built before the 1950s, including listed buildings and traditional fabric buildings; one-third of Ireland’s homes were built before the 1950s, mainly of solid walls or red brick and are difficult to treat for energy efficiency. This subproject studies how to include traditional fabric buildings in the deep retrofit Better Energy Homes Scheme.

Objectives:

The objectives of the project included the:

  • To know if it is possible to cost effectively achieve the new NZEB level from A3 to A2, identifying  the most cost-effective measures.
  • Evaluate if establish the NZEB level of A2 required for new buildings could have been economically feasible for all homes in the SuperHomes  deep retrofitting  program rather than the A3 rating.

     

    To study the principal solutions available in the Irish market to retrofit traditional fabric buildings to comply with the Better Energy Homes Scheme.

    Identify the principal barriers to retrofit traditional fabric buildings.
