European Union

Ireland enjoys close cultural and economic links with mainland Europe and has been a member of the European Union (EU) since 1973. Each year, we welcome over 1,000 students from across the EU. We have been a member of the Erasmus student exchange programme since its inception and we also welcome EU students undertaking their full undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

NUI Galway welcomes applications from international students who wish to undertake their full undergraduate degree at NUI Galway.  We offer a combination of flexible ‘open’ degree programmes, as well as specialised courses for students who know exactly what they wish to study at university.

 

Many of our programmes are unique in Ireland, such as those in Human Rights, Creative Writing, Theatre and Performance and Marine Science and we also offer certain programmes in Law and Medicine which are often not available at undergraduate level in other countries.

Undergraduate Entry Requirements (EU)

The National University of Ireland (NUI) sets minimum matriculation requirements for undergraduate applicants from the various European Union (EU) countries. Please refer to the NUI Matriculation document available to download from the NUI website for further details for your country.

 

Note: Please note that EU undergraduate applications are made via the Central Applications Office, Ireland.  Non-EU Undergraduate Applications are made directly to the International Affairs Office, NUI Galway.

 

The International Baccalaureate (IB) is also accepted for admission to undergraduate degree programmes at NUI Galway.

As a general guide, IB applicants must present a mininum overall score of 28 points including:

  • Two subjects grade 4 at Higher Level and four subjects grade 4 at Subsidiary Level, to include English plus specific programme requirements.

Postgraduate Entry Requirements (EU)

Entry Requirements for postgraduate programmes vary, but the following information provides a general guide to the minimum entry requirements for consideration for various EU countries.

Please note that students whose first language is not English must also meet the University's English Language Requirements.

France

The Maîtrise (5 years) is considered comparable to the Irish Level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree. Applicants presenting a Maîtrise with an overall average of ≥2.5 (Trés Bien) can be considered for a Ph.D.

The new Licence (3 year) degree is also considered equivalent to the Irish Level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree. Applicants presenting an overall average of ≥2.5 (Trés Bien) may be considered for a postgraduate programme.

Germany

The traditional Erstes Staatsexamen / Magister Artium / Diplom is considered comparable to the Irish Level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree. Applicants presenting an average grade of 1 or 2 may be considered consideration for a postgraduate programme.

The new Bologna style 3 year Bachelor degree is considered comparable to the Irish Level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree. Applicants presenting an average grade of 1 or 2 may be considered for a postgraduate programme.

Italy

The Bologna style Laurea degree (180 ECTS) is to the Irish Level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree. Holders with an average of 30 (per module) can be considered for postgraduate study, but PhD applicants would normally be required to hold a Masters, also with a score of 30 (per module) 110/110.

Spain

The Bologna degree, Título de Licenciado / Título de Ingeniero, takes 4 years and considered equivalent to the Irish Level 8 (Honours) Bachelor Degree. A GPA of 9 out of 10 can be considered for postgraduate study.
