What Students Have said about us - IMS Surveys
In May 2001 Irish Marketing Services were asked to conduct a Student Survey. Out of an overall rating of 7 the following services scored the following:
Health Unit:
5.39
Chaplains:
6.12
Student Counsellors:
5.4
Sports Facilities:
4.93
Irish Market Surveys were further employed in 2002 to undertake a qualitative research exercise in an entirely open-ended manner, an exploration of student attitudes to the university and their degree of engagement with it. Below are some of the comments made by students in that survey in relation to student services:
" I've actually been to the Counsellors. They were excellent-brilliant"
" I was in *** University. You were asking there, is the College student orientated. It think it is definitely way more so here".
" If I hadn't played a sport I don't think I would have lasted in college because Arts is so big. I didn't know many people in my year and therefore I was unhappy".
" At the start of the year I was petrified because I knew no one. Arts is very big. That's why sports/societies is so important".
Other Comments
Chaplaincy
Rather than the Chaplains saying what they think they are, some students give their view -
'The Chaplain always makes time to listen to me, even when I don't really know what I'm talking about myself but when I need to talk anyway' .
Aoife, Third Arts
'I think there has to be somebody in college who is on the staff but who is on our side - a sort of access point. Somebody who will speak for me and defend me when I am in trouble. I know when I am in the wrong and he does too but he will speak up on my side, like my father or mother would but I wouldn't always tell them'.
Evan, Second Electronic Engineering
'It's reassuring to know that there is a person in the college who says prayers for us and isn't just marking us or grading us' .
Joanne, Second Arts
'I like the Chaplains. I think they give a great service. They are approachable, good natured, good humoured, kind and generous with their time. They seem to actually enjoy their job which makes it so much easier to relate to them. I have gone for help over the years - once when I broke up with my boyfriend and my friends all said I was right to and I needed somebody else to tell me the truth - even though I was actually right !'
Marie, Medicine
'Somebody has to stand for something that doesn't change. The Chaplains stand for God. That doesn't change. That is reassuring'.
Myles, Third Commerce
'I ended up in casualty one weekend. I couldn't tell my family. I rang the Chaplain and he came over to me and sorted stuff out. He was the only one that I could think of that would be around and that wouldn't over react. He didn't'.
John, Commerce
'They listen. They sort out stuff. They fix things. They always seem calm. They do lovely things in the Church - especially Sunday Mass which isn't like at home at all and is lovely. It makes the college easier because it is like having my parish at home here. Home doesn't seem as far away.
Sara, Third Arts
Where else can you go in NUIG when you are stuck?
Gerard, Second LLB
'I think the College Chapel is the most perfect place I know. It is quiet, homely, holy and always makes me feel welcome. I go there to escape from the stress. I go too to find myself and to find God too - He can be hard to locate in everyday pressure but He is always in the quiet there. The Chaplains leave the Chapel open to everyone and I appreciate that very much. I think when I finish here this summer that, when I ever visit again, it is to the Chapel I will come. It has always been the heart of NUI, Galway for me'.

One-to-one / wellness assessments
I feel much better about the whole thing now. It really makes a difference to talk to someone about it and share my thoughts and worries. Thank you for your help.
You have been very helpful and encouraging.
Mind Body & Soul
Keep up the great work, its great to have these courses available! Also, you may be interested in some feedback about the meditation sessions on Thursdays (or is it somebody else's area?). I just wanted to say that I'm finding them very helpful and a great thing all together. It's something I look forward to all week and I would be trilled to have more sessions like this. It helps to distress, get my thoughts together, get motivated and hugely enhances my personal development. I'm in my fourth year now and staying focused is not that easy. meditation helps my thinking process and prevents "panic":) The sessions are packed and I know few people who dont attend them only because they have lectures clashing with the session.
On behalf of all the students, many thanks for organising the programme. It has been really enjoyable, if only too short. If at all possible I know many of us would love to attend more cooking classes so please keep us informed if you plan a second course. I know many of those taking part have also mentioned the classes to friends in the college who would be interested were the course to run again.
My name is Colm, i didn't initially sign up for the massage classes that took place over the past three weeks, but was told by a friend. I'm very thankful i was. I thoroughly enjoyed each of the three mondays. Me and one of my friends Ciara were up til 2am last night giving each other foot massages, me teaching her what i had learnt last week. I thought Aisling was a great teacher, and is a lovely person.
Exam De-stress Programme
Two of my class mates have highly recommended your De-stress program to me. Two very satisfied customers!
I really enjoyed the exam-destress programme. So I would appreciate if you could be so kind to let me know when the next one starts.
Thank you for doing this wonderful thing for us.
