Basic Surgical Training
BST is a two year training programme designed for medical graduates who wish to sit the AFRCS/MRCS examination. On successful completion of this examination doctors may go on to compete for a Higher Surgical Training post in the speciality of their choice.
The BST programme commences on July 1st every year. The programme is divided into four 6-month training posts with trainees appointed to Senior House Officer (SHO) positions and paid according to approved scales.
BST involves an intensive education programme consisting of a Basic Surgical Skills Course (BSSC), Advanced Trauma Life Support Course (ATLS) or a Care of the Critically Ill Surgical Patient Course (CCrISP). Teaching programmes are arranged throughout the academic year. Trainees undergo continuous assessment and are required to attend bi-annual counselling sessions.
Since January 2006 the RCSI Mobile Surgical Skill Unit has visited the Western Region to provide training to the first and second year trainees. The unit is based in Merlin Park Regional Hospital. Please contact the RCSI for the schedule of training days.
