Research Facilities
The Surgical Research Laboratory is based on the top floor of the Clinical Science Institute.
Affiliated researchers may also be based in various research units throughout NUI Galway or the teaching hospitals. Collaborative research is carried out nationally and internationally.

Cancer Biobank
Surgery houses a cancer research biobank accessed by researchers within and officially affiliated with the laboratory. The biobank is a collection of specimens and related data which are vital to ongoing research projects. Biobank data and inventory is managed by laboratory staff using
Shire Data Management System (
Genial Genetics). The biobank has received approval from the Galway University Hospitals Clinical Research Ethics Committee (CREC). Collection of specimens from patients and members of the public requires the consent of the individual participants. The Informed Consent Form signed by the participant has also received approval from the CREC.
Many primary specimens are collected and stored for research purposes along with processed/extracted biosamples, eg. DNA, RNA.
