Stress
If the stress of your personal, home or university life is causing you to consider leaving University before course completion, the following may be helpful.
Develop techniques to overcome stress and anxiety
Mild stress can be overcome in a variety of ways:
- Taking a break from study
- Beginning to study
- Speaking to family or friends about problems or contact one of our support services for a chat.
Student Services and
Chaplains are willing to help.
- Involvement in
clubs and
societies within and outside university.
- Making plans that are reasonable and achievable, that allow for recreation and social activity but that also recognise that academic success requires significant focus, study-time, concentration and effort.
- Good, balanced diet with regular full, wholesome meals daily. Get some advice from the
Health Promotion Officer
- Regular non-competitive exercise such as walking, cycling or swimming. Checkout our
recreational programmes or join the
Gym.
- Developing relaxation techniques such as yoga, meditation, deep breathing. Get some advice from the
Health Promotion Officer
- Moderating alcohol/drug intake. There is ample evidence to indicate that these substances have a seriously detrimental impact on one’s ability to succeed in university. Contact our
Drug and Alcohol Advisor for help and advice.

Serious Stress
If stress or anxiety is having a serious and detrimental impact on your life, on your health, on your relationships or on your progress in University, you are earnestly encouraged to seek support.
Within NUI, Galway, the
Chaplains,
Counsellors, or the
Student Health Unit are all available to help.
