The Population and Migration Research Cluster has two main foci which draw on existing strengths among researchers at NUI Galway: (i) national and transnational migration and (ii) families and children. Under these headings, the broad aims of the Cluster are:
The Cluster facilitates the exchange of knowledge and collaboration between researchers in Economics, Geography, Health Promotion, Political Science and Sociology, and Psychology. The members have strengths and extensive experience in both quantitative and qualitative analysis and policy evaluation. External links exist with the University of Limerick and with a wide range of other academic institutions nationally and internationally through collaborative research projects. Members have acted as advisors to national and international agencies with remits for population, migration, employment, and health issues. Their research has been funded by the EU, UNESCO, WHO and, in Ireland, by the DHC, HRB, IRC and the PRTLI. Research results are published in peer reviewed journals, as book length texts and as policy papers and reports. Key themes investigated include: fiscal impacts of skilled migration and knowledge flows; components of population change, ageing, social support networks; structural supports, access to and participation in education among migrants; health services and society; health and well-being among immigrant children and service provision; evaluation of programmes for inclusion and resilience among children from black and minority backgrounds; discursive critiques of the politics of integration policy; the migration/trafficking nexus; transnational migration and return flows; migration and the global political economy.
