The ISSP Conference 2009 was hosted by NUI Galway on 1-2 December 2009, and attracted over 110 academics, researchers and students of the Social Sciences to the two day event. We were honoured to welcome Professor Diane Halpern, Claremont McKenna College, USA, and Professor Paul Wyckoff, Hamilton College New York, as the Keynote Speakers. | The ISSP Summer School was a week-long school for PhD students of the social sciences, which focussed on policy making and its implications for innovation and communities. Over 40 students from seven third level institutions attended the School, which comprised of lectures, workshops, a field trip to TG4 and individual consultations. The InterTrade Ireland Innovation Conference 2009 was hosted by NUI Galway on 9-10 June, and attracted over 170 business and academic leaders to the two day event. We were honoured to welcome Professor Julian Birkinshaw of London Business School as the Keynote Speaker on both days. He delivered fascinating presentations on 'open innovation' and new management models, which are vital to stimulating innovation in challenging economic conditions. Other speakers included Dr. Patrick Collins, Whitaker Institute ; Dr. Nola-Hewitt-Dundas, Queen's University Belfast , and Professor Petra Ahweiler, UCD. Industry professionals from Northern and Southern Ireland took part in a lively panel discussion on the Innovation: Challenges and Opportunities. Whitaker Institute was delighted to host a two day visit by Professor Leslie de Chernatony (University of Birmingham) to NUI Galway. During his time here, he presented to a large academic and industry audience on "Growing Brand Value", which was concerned with the increasing importance of brands having to offer more value to stakeholders. He also hosted a Q&A session with NUI Galway research students, which focussed on the PhD process, including content, output (e.g. publications), and different research methodologies, such as qualitative and quantitative research methods. Whitaker Institute was delighted to host The Business of Climate Change lunchtime lecture in association with the Environmental Change Institute and the Galway Earth and Ocean Society. The lecture was given by David Korowicz (Head of Research & Consultant) of The Ecology Foundation and it was well attended by staff, students and members of the public. David gave a fascinating talk on the possible effects of climate change on the global economy, and discussed a range of options to tackle this very challenging issue. Professor Bill Lazonick attracted a large internal and external audience to his lecture on “The Innovative Enterprise”. Prof. Lazonick visited Whitaker Institute as part of the Enterprise Ireland International Speaker Programme. Prof. Lazonick contends that The Innovative Enterprise is essential to the analysis of the performance of the economy. The first part of Professor Lazonick’s presentation laid out the elements of innovative enterprise, while the second part illustrated a framework for analyzing the “social conditions of innovative enterprise”. Gerard George is Professor of Innovation and Entrepreneurship and serves as the Director of the Rajiv Gandhi Centre at Imperial College London, and is an Advanced Institute of Management Innovation Fellow of the UK's Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC). He was visiting Whitaker Institute as part of the Enterprise Ireland International Speakers Programme. Professor George’s talk focused on scientific innovators and dealt with entrepreneurial purpose, cultivating an entrepreneurial identity, assembling the entrepreneurial tool kit, the managerial challenges and the common experiences of inventing entrepreneurs.
