Global Women's Studies Celebrates the Centenary of International Women's Day
In recognition of the 100th anniversary of International Women’s Day (March 8th, 1911-2011), the Global Women’s Studies Programme (GWSP), in conjunction with the Irish Centre for Human Rights, the Galway Film Society, the Centre for Excellence in Learning and Teaching (CELT) and Gender ARC (an NUI Galway-UL research network), played host to a series of public events held throughout the week of March 7-11, 2011
International Women’s Day Events at NUI Galway Women, Power and Powerlessness - A Seminar with Inez McCormack
On the 7th of March from 12:30-1:30 Inez McCormack delivered a moving seminar on Women, Power and Powerlessness. Drawing from her own experience and reflecting on the common need for collective mobilization throughout the world in pursuit of equality, McCormack discussed women’s equality and inequality both nationally and internationally. A reception supported by Global Women’s Studies and the Irish Centre for Human Rights followed the event allowing time for informal discussion.
Women’s Political Movements in Ireland, Past and Present
As part of the celebrations to mark the centenary of International Women’s Day, the Global Women’s Studies Programme and the 50 50 Group, a single issue national advocacy group dedicated to achieving equal representation in Irish Politics, co-hosted a seminar featuring accounts of political movements and women political activists. Women politicians, including Hildegaard Naughton, Catherine Connolly, Trudy Brockie, and others discussed their own experiences in politics and how more equal representation of women in politics could be achieved.
This event was organised by Louise O’Riordan of the MA in Gender, Globalisation and Rights and member of the 50 50 Group.
Film Screening of 'Women without Men' (dir. Shirin Neshat)
Screened by the Galway Film Society and introduced by Dr. Niamh Reilly (GWSP) On Tuesday, 8th March, the award winning film ’Women without Men’ directed by Shirin Neshat was screened by the Galway Film Society, supported by the Global Women’s Studies Programme in recognition of International Women’s Day. The film traces the lives of four women during the turbulent 50’s in Iran. Dr. Niamh Reilly introduced the film with a short discussion. All proceeds were donated to Amnesty International.
A Celebration of the Life and Work of Diana Leonard - with Dr. Kelly Coate, CELT and Anne Byrne, Political Science and Sociology
On Wednesday, 9 March, a lunch seminar was co-hosted by the Centre for Excellence and Learning (CELT) at NUI Galway and the Global Women’s Studies Programme. The seminar celebrated the exceptional contribution of Professor Emeritus, Dianne Leonard, founder of the Centre for Research on Education and Gender at the Institute of Education, University of London. During a week in which International Women’s Day was marked through a variety of activities, we felt it was an appropriate time to pay tribute to a hugely inspirational scholar, teacher and activist, who died in November 2010.
Gender ARC Public Seminar - Historical Perspectives on International Women’s Day
The final event of the week was also the first Gender ARC Public Seminar. On Friday March 11th, historians Caitríona Clear and Bernadette Whelan presented a joint seminar on Historical Perspectives on International Women’s Day. Mary Clancy of Global Women’s Studies moderated the seminar, which was sponsored by GWS.
Dr. Caitríona Clear, Department of History, NUI Galway, presented 'Women's day traditions and women's collective action in Ireland and Europe' and Dr. Bernadette Whelan, Department of History, University of Limerick spoke on the subject of 'American influences on Irish women, 1921-60'.
About Gender ARC – Advanced Research Consortium on Gender, Culture and the Knowledge Society – is a strategic research alliance initiative bringing together academics across NUI, Galway and UL who are currently engaged in gender-focused research in disciplines from Sociology, Politics, Law, Business, Economics, Education, Geography, Nursing and Midwifery, and Health Sciences to Women’s Studies, History, Literature, Languages, Irish Studies and Film Studies.
European Women’s Studies Class of Spring 2011 Photo Exhibition
The European Women’s Studies class of spring 2011 prepared a photo exhibition on the theme of From Here to Equality, the theme of International Women’s Day 2011. The photo exhibition was displayed at various events throughout the week.

Global Women's Studies Lunch-Time Seminar Series 2010-2011
Each month throughout the 2010/2011 academic year the seminar series will showcase the work of researchers, academics and students with a gender-focus from within the GWSP and the NUI Galway community at large. All are invited to attend these public seminars. The first seminar will be an extended event in recognition of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence. (This seminar is held in conjunction with the Rape Crisis Network Ireland and supported by the BA CONNECT in Global Women’s Studies.) Other seminar speakers include Emma Brannlund and Lubna Azzam (NUIG), Rachel Pokora (Nebraska Wesleyan University), Nata Duvvury (NUIG), and Angela O’Connell (NUIG).

Speakers scheduled for the 2009-2010 lecture series are Lori Heise (19 November), Nira Yuval-Davis (12 March), Naila Kabeer (18 March) and Naomi Goldenberg (15 April).
