The Global Women’s Studies Programme and the Gender Research Cluster in the School of Political Science and Sociology are delighted to host the eminent social economist, Professor Naila Kabeer, as part of the 2010 lecture series.
Marriage, motherhood and masculinity in the global economy:
A crisis in social reproduction

Professor Naila Kabeer is a social economist, Research Fellow at the Institute of Development Studies, University of Sussex, and a collaborating researcher at the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development. Prof. Kabeer is one of the world’s foremost experts in feminist economics, specialising in gender, poverty, and social policy issues. She has been active in developing frameworks and methodologies for integrating gender concerns into policy and planning and has substantial experience of training and advisory work with governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies and NGOs.
She is the author of numerous books, articles and research reports, including the seminal work Reversed Realities: Gender Hierarchies in Development Thought (Vero 1994) and The Power to Choose: Bangladeshi Women and Labour Market Decisions in London and Dhaka (Verso 2000). Her most recent publications are ’Mainstreaming gender and social protection for the informal economy' (Commonwealth Secretariat), ’Global perspectives on gender equality: reversing the gaze' (Routledge, London) and the 2009 UN Report on the World Survey on the Role of Women in Development.
Naila Kabeer’s talk on 'Marriage, motherhood and masculinity in the global economy: a crisis in social reproduction' is a not-to-be missed event for anyone with an interest in developmental studies, gender, family and economics, or the relationship between capitalism, crisis and women’s employment.
