Gender Research Cluster and the Global Women’s Studies Programme Public Lecture Series
The Global Women’s Studies Programme and the Gender Research Cluster in the School of Political Science and Sociology are delighted to host Professor Naomi Goldenberg of the University of Ottawa, Canada, as part of the 2010 lecture series.
Gender and the Vestigial State of Religion
Date: Wednesday, 14th of April, 6pm
Venue: Lecture Theatre, Aras Moyola
Naomi Goldenberg is Professor at the Department of Classics and Religious Studies of the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ottawa, Canada. She is a founding member of the Women’s Studies program at the University of Ottawa and was director of the program from 1989 to 1992.
Professor Goldenberg is the author of
The Changing of the Gods: Feminism and the End of Traditional Religion (1979) and
Resurrecting the Body: Feminism, Religion, and Psychoanalysis (1993) and has given innovative lectures, such as her psychoanalytic reading of Dr. Seuss’ The Cat in the Hat, throughout the world. She has a particular interest in the intersection of religion and psychoanalytic theory, gender, and popular culture. Her recent work seeks to bridge the religious/secular divide in social theory.
In the upcoming lecture, Professor Goldenberg hypothesizes understanding 'religions' as former states and thus states – in – waiting. Through this novel approach, she suggests that the mystification of religion works against women when states support sexist community/religious leaders who are given power and authority over such areas as ’the family’. This lecture is sure to prove original and challenging and will be of interest to those working/studying in the areas of religious studies, social and political studies, and psychoanalysis and gender studies.
