DUVVURY LAUNCHES UNFPA REPORT ON WORLD POPULATION
Dr. Nata Duvvury spoke at the October 26th launch of UNFPA’s report,
State of the World Population, 2011: People and Possibilities in a World of 7 Billion. Jan O’Sullivan, Minister of State, Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, launched the report. Dr Jacqueline Mahon, Senior Policy Advisor, Global Health and Health Systems, UNFPA, introduced the report and Dr Duvvury commented on the report, based on her extensive international development expertise. The event was organised by the Irish Family Planning Association and held at the Shelburne Hotel, Dublin.
GLOBAL WOMEN'S STUDIES STUDENTS AWARDED IRCHSS POSTGRADUATE FELLOWSHIPS
Caroline Forde and
Aura Lounasma, PhD students in the Global Women's Studies programme in the School of Political Science and Sociology, were each awarded an IRCHSS postgraduate scholarship in the 2011 round. These highly competitive and prestigious scholarship have a success rate of less than 15% and are open to PhD students studying at Irish Universities in the Humanities and Social Sciences.
RELIGION, GENDER AND HUMAN RIGHTS CONFERENCE
An international conference, funded by the European Science Foundation and Linköping University, and sponsored by NUI Galway, took place on 21-25 June 2011 in Sweden. Entitled
Religion, Gender and Human Rights: Challenges for Multicultural and Democratic Societiess, the conference was an initiative of the
Gender and Public Sphere thematic group within
Gender ARC. The conference aimed to move gender from the periphery to the centre of debate on the role of religion in public and political life in democratic and democratising multicultural societies. For more information, click

UNIVERSITY SCHOLAR PRIZE AWARDED TO GWS STUDENT
The Global Women’s Studies Programme is delighted to learn that 3rd Year student
Kim Merrifield was awarded the title of
University Scholar for her outstanding achievements in the 2009/2010 examinations. This award is given to students who achieve a minimum of a first class honours in one subject, with a second class grade one honours (2:1) in their second subject in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies. Kim Merrifield,
a student in the BA CONNECT in Global Women’s Studies Programme, was conferred with the award on the 10th of February at the NUI Galway awards day. The Global Women’s Studies Programme offers Kim their congratulations and wishes her well in her future academic successes.

CALL FOR PAPERS
The
Gender and Child Welfare Network: 4th Interdisciplinary Conference will be held at NUIG on 15 June 2011. Presentations are invited on any area of theory, research or practice which relates to the themes of the conference and can be from researchers or practitioners in a range of academic and practice disciplines, including sociology, psychology, social policy, social work, socio-legal studies, education and nursing.

MARY CLANCY COMMENDED
Mary Clancy, co-ordinator of the European Women’s Studies programme, has been awarded a Lifelong Learning Programme Certificate of Recognition by the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Multilingualism and Youth through her work with ATHENA – Advanced Thematic network of Women’s Studies in Europe.
NEW GRANTS SECURED FOR GWS
Nata Duvvury has secured two new grants for Global Women's Studies: The first, which is funded by CARDI, is for a project on
Older Women Workers’ Access to Pensions. The other is on
Gender Equality, Sexual and Reproductive Health, and Poverty Reduction: Understanding the Links with Economic Growth and Improvements in Household Income, which is funded by UNFPA. For more information, click

2010 POSTGRADUATE CONFERENCE
The 2010 interdisciplinary gender and feminist postgratuate conference of
Sibéal, the Irish Postgraduate Gender and Women's Studies Network, will take place at NUI-Galway on

NAOMI GOLDENBERG LECTURE
Professor
Naomi Goldenberg (University of Ottawa, Canada) will speak on Wednesday, 14 April, at 6 pm, in the Lecture Theatre, Aras Moyola, on "Gender and the Vestigial State of Religion" as part of the
Gender Cluster and Global Women’s Studies Public Lecture Series, 2009-2010. She is the author of
The Changing of the Gods: Feminism and the End of Traditional Religion (1979) and
Resurrecting the Body: Feminism, Religion, and Psychoanalysis (1993). Her recent work seeks to bridge the religious/secular divide in social theory. For more details, click
