Sport is central to life at NUI Galway. There is something to suit everyone, from the amateur enthusiast to the professional athlete! So it’s no surprise that NUI Galway sent more Olympians to the Beijing Olympics this year than any other Irish University. Student Paul Hession, Ireland’s fastest man, and former students Cormac Folan, Alan Martin, and Olive Loughnane all represented Ireland with great success this year.
In August 2008 our new Sports Centre opened and it is equipped with the most up to date facilities in the country. The state-of-the-art 6,500 sq m leisure complex includes a 25 meter 6-lane swimming pool, squash and racquetball courts, a three-court basketball hall, multipurpose studios, a 130 piece gym and a high-tech climbing wall. The Sports Centre also boasts an elite performance gym with training facilities for all sports enthusiasts.
The University attracts top-class athletes in all sports. There are over 40 sports clubs at NUI Galway including Gaelic football, rugby, squash and even surfing, there is something for everybody! The best way to experience NUI Galway is to visit the campus! If you couldn’t make the last Open Day in October, or you just want chance to explore the campus, you are very welcome to visit our next Open Day which is on the 25 th April from 9am to 3pm. This will give you the opportunity to ask questions about our courses, our students and college life! On the Open Day we will run a variety of interactive taster sessions on a wide range of subjects. Our Student Ambassadors will be on hand to answer all your questions about life at NUI Galway.
