eduroam

Eduroam
Eduroam (Educational Roaming) is a globally available service for educational institutions which allows educational and research users wireless Internet access at eduroam enabled institutions by authenticating with the user credentials they normally use at their home location.
Who can use the service?
- Visitors to NUI Galway. Visitors must have their wireless clients configured (and test their authentication) before arriving onsite. Visitors must contact their home institution for eduroam support.
- NUI Galway staff and students can use eduroam on campus and also in other eduroam enabled institutions. To configure your device, see detailed steps below.
Configure your own device
The eduroam installer tool (CAT) configures your device to securely connect to this service. The eduroam installer is available at https://cat.eduroam.org Note: You must be connected to the Internet to complete this task, if you are on campus you can connect to NUIGWiFi.
Connecting a Windows Device
- Open a web browser and go to https://cat.eduroam.org
Click on the installer button.
- You will be presented with the following page. Click on National University of Ireland, Galway
- The installer will detect your device type, confirm this is correct and click the installer button.

- At the Welcome to eduroam CAT screen, click

- At the eduroam installer screen click Next

- eduroam install will only work for NUI Galway users, click OK

- Enter your credentials as follows
Username: campusaccountid@nuigalway.ie
Password: Campus Account password
Click Install
- Click Finish to complete the installation

Once the installer is complete, select eduroam from your list of available newtworks to connect.
Connect an Apple Device (iPhone / iPad)
- Open a web browser and go to https://cat.eduroam.org
Select institution National University of Ireland, Galway from the dropdown menu and click on the button on the bottom of the page.
- The installer will detect your device type. You will be presented with the following page.
Click Download Installer
- A prompt to open Settings to show you a configuration profile, choose Allow

- At the Installer Profile, choose Install

- At the Installer Certificate Warning, choose Install

- At the Installer Profile, choose Install

- Enter your credentials as follows
Username: campusaccountid@nuigalway.ie, choose Next
Password: Campus Account password, choose Next
- The profile has now installed, choose Done

- Once the installer is complete, select eduroam from your list of available networks to connect.
Note: If after running the installer and you are connected to eduroam, but you still do not have internet access, please check your proxy settings and set to OFF
Connecting an Apple Mac
- Open a web browser and go to https://cat.eduroam.org
Click on the Installer button.
- You will be presented with the following page. Click on National University of Ireland, Galway

- You will brought back to the Installer button. Click on it once more

- The Installer package will download locally to your machine. Click on the package from the downloads bar on your browser or the respective download location

- The Installer package will now open. Click 'Continue'

- On the next screen, enter your credentials as follows
Username: campusaccountid@nuigalway.ie
Password: Campus Account password
Click Install
- The Configuration Profile Tool may prompt you at this stage for a username and password. This is the local username and password on your machine. Enter your credentials as relevant and click OK

- The profile has now installed

- To connect to eduroam, click on your Wi-Fi settings and select eduroam from the dropdown

- To ensure eduroam's successful connection at this point. Click on System Preferences on your machine

- Select 'Network' from the System Preferences screen

- From the Network menu, ensure Wi-Fi is highlighted and click on 'Advanced'

- You will be presented with the below screen, click on the Proxies tab

- From the Proxies tab, highlight 'Auto Proxy Discovery'

- Now uncheck the box beside 'Auto Proxy Discovery' and click OK

- You are returned to the Network window. Click 'Apply' to ensure the changes you have made take effect.

Note: For the CAT installer to work, your system date will need to be correct to the current time / date. Please ensure your system date is correct.
Connect a Linux PC
- Open a web browser and go to https://cat.eduroam.org
Click on the installer button.
- You will be presented with the following page. Click on National University of Ireland, Galway

- The installer will detect your device type, confirm this is correct and click the installer button.

- At the Welcome to eduroam CAT screen, click


- Enter your credentials as follows
Username: campusaccountid@nuigalway.ie
Password: Campus Account password - Once the installer is complete, select eduroam from your list of available networks to connect.
Android
Android devices do not have a built-in means of taking an installer file from eduroam CAT and creating a WiFi profile from it. You must therefore install the "eduroam CAT" app from the Google Play store.
Please note that Android powered devices are produced by a variety of manufacturers each of which may customize the interface in a different manner. As such, the instructions below may not exactly match your device. There are also several different versions of the Android operating system available that may also lead to deviations from the steps below;
Step1:
To run this process you can either connect your device to the network over your 3G/4G data connection as normal or connect via NUIGWIFI
Step 2:
Go to Google Play Store and download the eduroam CAT Installer:

Open installer:
Select National University of Ireland Galway (under nearby configs):

Click install:

Click yes:

Enter your login id and password and click install:
You will receive the following screen which is correct:
You have now completed the installation and are connected over the eduroam SSID, you can exit the application
NB
If you receive the following error at installation stage please go the WiFi once more under settings and remove the eduroam profile which may exist. The installer will then run

Click forget to remove profile and return to installing profile from application
Manual Configuration
The eduroam website contains comprehensive documentation covering other operating systems and 802.1x supplicants. Refer to these documents to manually configure your client.
To complete these manual installation based on the HeaNet documentation you'll need some information specific to NUI Galway. The documentation contains generic information as in column B but you will need to replace with with NUI Galway specific information as in column C. If any of the details in your WiFi profile are incorrect, then your authentication will fail and you will not gain wifi access via eduroam.
