Since its formation in 2003, when the Departments of Geology, Oceanography and the Applied Geophysics Unit amalagamated, EOS has become the largest geoscience unit in Ireland.
EOS has two main aims. The first is to supply a Bachelors Degree in Earth and Ocean Sciences, unique in Ireland. The second is to conduct top class research into exploration for, and management and conservation of, Ireland's physical resources.
There are 10 academic staff, 4 technicians, an administrator, 6 post-doctoral researchers, more than 20 doctoral students plus some 200 full-time undergraduate students. EOS has been extremely effective in attracting research funding from European and Irish sources. Interdisciplinary research is encouraged between the major research groups concerned with: Deep Ocean Research; Habitat Mapping; Crustal Tectonics and Geophysics; Environmental Geology; Past and Present Environments; and Geofluids.
EOS is a member of the Martin Ryan Institute, the Environmental Change Institute and the COSMOGrid supercomputing consortia and enjoys excellent relationships with the Geological Survey of Ireland, the Marine Institute, The Dublin Institute of Advanced studies and other Earth Science Departments within Ireland and Europe. EOS produces some 40 scientific publications a year.
