Course Overview

The Diploma in French is designed for students with an interest in French to acquire a high level of communication skills in the language (oral and written) through a variety of practical language exercises.  Great emphasis is placed on continuous assessment and feedback to students.  Students will study major issues in the contemporary French speaking world, such as immigration, education, culture and politics.

Requirements and Assessment

All modules in the Diploma are individually assessed. The assessment for each module takes the form of essays, written assignments or presentations during the semester and a written examination at the end of the semester.

Basic computer skills will be an advantage. E-mail, internet and NUI Galway's online learning environment are in use throughout the course.

Candidates who are 21 years or over on or before January 1st of year of entry may gain entry to the programme on the basis of mature years. Candidates under 21 years should meet the minimum matriculation requirements as outlined in the Frequently Asked Questions section.

Course Outline

The programme aims to equip students with appropriate written and oral skills in French. The French native teachers will use the communicative method of modern language instruction. He/she will gradually introduce the relevant points of grammar to the students and show how these are applied to written and oral structures. By the end of each week/term/and year students should be able to converse and comprehend a variety of topics and situations that are normally encountered in everyday situations in a contemporary Francophone environment.

  • Improvers’ French – on écoute, on écrit et on parle 1

  • French Culture – connaître le monde francophone 2 Oral French – Parlons Français 2

Further Education

If you have successfully completed a Diploma in French and would like to develop your French language skills further, you can choose the following modules through the Continuing Professional Development route.

You will register as a ‘Continuing Professional Credit’ student and obtain a statement of examination results for modules successfully completed.  No separate award is provided; you will not obtain a BA in French.  If you are a NUI* BA graduate, you can add French to your BA subjects and receive a transcript of examination results to this effect (all modules listed above required).
