Medical Science (Masters in)
Course Overview
The Master’s in Medical Science is designed to enhance the academic and professional development of healthcare professionals by improving their level of scientific appreciation for evidence-based practice.
Candidates will complete core research modules as well as their chosen speciality module from one of the following:
- Database Development and Medical Informatics
- Musculoskeletal Medicine
- Exercise Physiology
- Patient Safety and Human Factors
In addition, candidates will work independently with the support of a supervisor to carry out an original piece of research relevant to their healthcare setting.

Course Outline
The Masters in Medical Science (full-time) is a 1 year (12 months) in service programme divided into two teaching semesters (September to December and January to April). During the summer period (May to August) the candidate's focus on completing their minor dissertation.
Candidates will complete 6 modules (60 ECTS) and a research thesis (30ECTS). There are 5 core modules, Informatics, Research Methods (2), and Biostatistics (2), as well as a chosen speciality module from one of the following:
- Database Development and Medical Informatics
- Musculoskeletal Medicine
- Exercise Physiology
- Patient Safety and Human Factors
In addition, candidates will work independently with the support of a supervisor to carry out an original piece of research in their chosen area or from a topic provided by the Course Director relevant to their healthcare setting.
The Masters in Medical Science (part-time) is delivered over 2 years. Candidates follow the same schedule as the full-time programme but have an additional year to complete their research thesis.
