Biography

Dr Roche graduated in 1999 with a B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Physiology at NUI Galway following which she undertook an M.Sc. in Neuropharmacology (1999-2001). Her interest in stress-related disorders began during her time as a research assistant in Prof Rita Valentino laboratory in Philadelphia (2001) where she examined the neural circuitry underlying stress-induced changes in the serotonergic system. She subsequently pursued a Ph.D. (2002-2005) characterizing behavioural and physiological responses in models of depression at the Department of Pharmacology, NUI Galway. Following a year as a contract lecturer, Dr Roche undertook a post-doctoral research (2005-2008) position focused on the role of the endocannabinoid system on conditioned stress-induced changes in pain responding and inflammation. In September 2008, Dr Roche was appointed Lecturer in Physiology at NUI Galway. 

Research Interests

Dr Roches research interests include

   The role of the cannabinoid system in regulating of neuroinflammation and immune function
   Neural substrates underpinning stress, depression and pain and their interaction
   Neurobiology underlying autism spectrum disorders

The Roche Lab employs a whole systems approach to addressing research questions in the aforementioned areas. A wide range of in vivo, ex vivo and in vitro methodologies are utilized to examine the role of a number of neurotransmitter systems including monoamines, endocannabinoids and neuropeptides, neuroendocrine and immune processes in physiological and behavioural responses.

Teaching Interests

I currently supervise a team of 10 PhD students (3 as primary supervisor), and co-supervise/mentor a further 2 postdoctoral researchers and 2 research assistants. To date I have sucessfully supervised 7 PhD and 1MSc research student to completion (4 PhD students as primary supervisor).

I am the overall year coordinator for 3rd year Physiology (B.Sc. and B.Sc. Biomedical Science).

Module coordinator for Neurophysiology (SI311); Endocrinology (SI312/SI3102); Advance Neurophysiology (SI422)

I use a multitude of teaching methadologies and formats from lectures and seminars, practicals and lab based projects, small group teaching, flipped classroom teaching, poster and oral presentations and case studies in my teaching.
