Course Overview

Our First Year Students' End of Year Performance with Macnas

The BA Connect programme allows students to obtain a degree in two ordinary Arts subjects (e.g. English and French, Psychology and History – and many other options), while also connecting with a small amount of Drama modules, amounting to roughly 30 percent of their time in university. The Drama element of the degree provides students with introductory modules in theatre history, stage craft and acting. The programme blends practice- and classroom-based activities. It is not a formal qualification in Drama (students interested in such an option should instead apply for GY118, the degree in Drama and one other subject). However, for students who want to obtain a degree in two Arts subjects but wish to have an additional specialism in Drama, this programme is an ideal option!

What subject choices will I have?

This specialism is delivered in the timetable of Arts subject Group Five and, therefore, may not be studied with Sociological and Political Studies, Information Technology, Welsh or Léann an Aistriúcháin. Students should contact the Programme Director for further advice on timetabling and subject choice restrictions and should be aware that some classes will be delivered in the evenings.

Glossary of Terms

Credits
You must earn a defined number of credits (aka ECTS) to complete each year of your course. You do this by taking all of its required modules as well as the correct number of optional modules to obtain that year's total number of credits.
Module
An examinable portion of a subject or course, for which you attend lectures and/or tutorials and carry out assignments. E.g. Algebra and Calculus could be modules within the subject Mathematics. Each module has a unique module code eg. MA140.
Subject
Some courses allow you to choose subjects, where related modules are grouped together. Subjects have their own required number of credits, so you must take all that subject's required modules and may also need to obtain the remainder of the subject's total credits by choosing from its available optional modules.
Optional
A module you may choose to study.
Required
A module that you must study if you choose this course (or subject).
Required Core Subject
A subject you must study because it's integral to that course.
Semester
Most courses have 2 semesters (aka terms) per year, so a three-year course will have six semesters in total. For clarity, this page will refer to the first semester of year 2 as 'Semester 3'.

Further Education

The course serves as a foundation for those wishing to pursue their study of practical theatre and/or theatre history. The course also develops students’ abilities in analysis and communication; it builds confidence in public speaking, leadership, and teamwork. Such skills are vital to the creative industries but are transferable to many spheres of life and business. An MA in Drama and Theatre is on offer at NUI Galway.

Why Choose This Course?

Career Opportunities

This is a BA degree that offers all of the career opportunities of that qualification, including teaching, public service, business and more besides.

Many graduates of BA in Performing Arts Studies have gone on to take postgraduate or further training in Drama and Theatre, including at NUI Galway.

The programme also provides many transferable skills: public speaking, leadership, critical analysis, teamwork, and public relations. The course is not ideally suited to students contemplating careers in theatre, media, film, the performing arts – such students should instead apply for GY118, the BA Degree in Drama. However, this BA Connect option is geared towards any student with an interest in pursuing theatre and performance as a hobby while engaged in other professional activities after graduation.

What Our Students Say

Roisin

Roisin Dolan |   BA Connect (Theatre and Performance)

One of my favourite things about my first year of this course was that through studying theatre and performance, I got the chance to meet a really great group of people and at the beginning of the year found myself immediately surrounded by fifteen new friends who share the same love for theatre as I do. With this course I am given the chance to work with theatre professionals and explore all aspects of theatre both in practice and theory. Classes involve a large amount of practical work, meaning that each classmate is very active within the class which makes a great difference from sitting in lecture halls all day. I think I speak on behalf of myself and my classmates when I say that I really cannot wait to see what the next three years of the course are going to bring.
