Course Overview

This programme introduces students to dramatic literature, theatre history and practical theatre, including acting. The programme is practice-based, with much of the teaching done through workshops. Students will benefit from strong links already forged with the theatre community. NUI Galway has a rich tradition in the arts: several of our former students have founded theatre companies locally, nationally and internationally.

Dynamic partnerships

NUI Galway has formed a number of very exciting partnerships with prominent creative arts organisations. Performing Arts Studies students enjoy a unique opportunity to interact with professional actors, directors and theatre practitioners. Partner organisations include the renowned Druid Theatre Company, the international Galway Arts Festival and An Taibhdhearc, the National Irish Language theatre. Other local and national partnerships are currently being developed. 

What subject choices will I have?

This specialism is delivered in the timetable of Arts subject Group Five and, therefore, may not be studied with Sociological and Political Studies, Information Technology, Welsh or Léann an Aistriúcháin. Students should contact the Programme Director for further advice on timetabling and subject choice restrictions and should be aware that some classes will be delivered in the evenings.

Entry Requirements

Minimum Grade H5 in two subjects and passes in four other subjects at O6/H7 Grades in the Leaving Certificate, including Irish, English, another language, and three other subjects recognised for entry purposes. No auditions or portfolios are required as part of the admission process.

Course Outline

Students in their first year take modules in Performing Arts Studies and in three other subjects from the 20 on offer. In second year, students select two of their three other subjects and take two modules in performance. Third year is spent studying theatre and performing arts with professional practitioners or, in the case of language students, abroad. In the fourth year, students drop Performing Arts Studies to concentrate on their two degree subjects.

Further Education

The course serves as a foundation for those wishing to pursue their study of practical theatre and/or theatre history. The course also develops students’ abilities in analysis and communication; it builds confidence in public speaking, leadership, and teamwork. Such skills are vital to the creative industries but are transferable to many spheres of life and business. An MA in Drama and Theatre is on offer at NUI Galway.

Career Opportunities

Many graduates of BA in Theatre and Performance have achieved national and international success as actors, writers, critics, and directors. The university has strong links with theatre companies locally and throughout Ireland. Students will therefore meet a variety of theatre professionals and writers during the course, and will benefit from the international reputation of Galway as a centre for excellence in drama and theatre.

The programme also provides many transferable skills: public speaking, leadership, critical analysis, teamwork, and public relations. The course is suited to students contemplating careers in theatre, media, film, the performing arts and education, but it is geared towards any student with a passion for theatre and performance.

In their third year, students studying a modern language as one or more of their subjects combine studying it in a country where this is the native tongue with the study of the theatrical practice and culture of their hosts. Students not studying languages remain in Ireland and participate in off-campus workshops developed by qualified practitioners, as well as working with a professional director on a stage production.

One of my favourite things about my first year of this course was that through studying theatre and performance, I got the chance to meet a really great group of people and at the beginning of the year found myself immediately surrounded by fifteen new friends who share the same love for theatre as I do. With this course I am given the chance to work with theatre professionals and explore all aspects of theatre both in practice and theory. Classes involve a large amount of practical work, meaning that each classmate is very active within the class which makes a great difference from sitting in lecture halls all day. I think I speak on behalf of myself and my classmates when I say that I really cannot wait to see what the next three years of the course are going to bring.
