Biography

I am currently a lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery. I am registered general and children's nurse.
I worked in University Hospital Galway, Ireland, the Addenbrookes NHS Trust in Cambridge, UK and Our Lady's Children's Hospital in in Dublin. I lecture primarily on the Bachelor of Nursing Degree Programme. I aso teach and supervise research at Undergraduate and Postgrdaute level. I received the NUIG President's Teaching Excellence Award in 2016 and received a further nomination in 2017.

My current research interests are in qualitative methodologies, trial methdologies and dementia. I am Co-Chair of the Qualitative Research in Trials Centre: QUESTS - www.quests.ie

Research Interests

My primary expertise is in qualitative research methodology and qualitative evidence synthesis(QES). I have experience in and published on qualitative case study methodology, qualitative evidence synthesis methodology, data collection, ethics, rigour, paradigms and analysis in qualitative research. This interest in research methodology led to my current focus on QES and trial methodology. I was recently awarded funding from the Irish Research Council  New Foundations Scheme for the purpose of developing a clearly articulated pathway between QES and trial methodology and further developing QES expertise in Ireland.

I am currently involved in a number of qualitative evidence syntheses. I am leading a Cochrane Review for the Cochrane Methodology Review Group exploring recruitment to trials. I am co-chair for the recently established QUESTS (Qualitative Research in Trials) centre, www.quests.ie, which aims to maximise the integration of qualitative research in randomised trials. This is achieved through a focus on three activities relating to inclusion of high quality qualitative research in randomised trials (i) SUPPORT for undertaking qualitative research with randomised trials (ii) TRAINING and education on the use of qualitative research and trials and (iii) Primary methodology RESEARCH on the use of qualitative research in trials.

Teaching Interests

I am currently year leader for fourth year of the undergraduate programme: Bachelor of Nursing Degree (General). I have taught on a number of undergraduate modules including Principles and Practice of Clinical Nursing, Assessing and Promoting Health, Research Methods, Relating to Clients, Care of the Child in Hospital, Physically Ill Adult, Transition to Practice and Biological Sciences (Genetics).

At postgraduate level, I have developed and facilitated units for the blended learning programmes and taught students undertaking the Master in Health Sciences. Postgraduate modules include: Management, Critical Issues in Chronic Illness, Management of Chronic Illness and Advanced Research Methods.

I have supervised students undertaking the Masters in Nursing and Research Masters here in the School. I also supervise students undertaking the Masters in Health Sciences Clinical Education with the Discipline of General Practice.I am currently co-supervising four students undertaking a Doctorate of Nursing Practice.
