Biography

Dr. Georgina Gethin, PhD, MSc Clinical Research, RGN, PG Dip Wound Healing, Dip Anatomy, Dip Applied Physiology, FFNMRCSI
 Dr. Georgina Gethin was appointed Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Midwifery, National University of Ireland, Galway in 2013 and as Head of School in October 2016. She holds a PhD and fellowship from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and has an extensive background in wound management as a clinical nurse specialist, clinical consultancy, member of the diabetic foot team in NUI Galway, lead researcher on the development of the first national wound care guidelines in Ireland and national framework for procurement of wound care products. She lectures at undergraduate and post-graduate level on wound healing and tissue repair and research methods. Georgina is supervisor and examiner for MSc and PhD research programmes. Georgina is a council member of the European Wound Management Association,  in addition to being a member of the Cochrane wounds group. Her specialist areas of interest are in epidemiology of wounds, wound bed assessment incorporating wound pH and temperature, palliative wound care and the use of honey in wound healing. This is supported through a commitment to evidence based practice as evidenced by being on the editorial board of 3 journals, and extensive publications in peer-reviewed journals. She is collaborating with colleagues in the UK, Switzerland and Italy on research projects  including development of guidelines for palliative wound care.

Research Interests

My primary area of interest is in wound science. This includes assessment of the wound bed and the development of diagnostic and objective wound assessment tools including that of wound pH.
The use of honey in wound healing and the management of chronic wounds.
Palliative wound care.
Evidence based practice and in particular randomised controlled trials of interventions .
