Biography

Dr William Finnegan BE (Civil) PhD CEng MIEI is a Research Fellow and an Adjunct Lecturer in the SFI MaREI Research Centre and Ryan Institute, School of Engineering at NUI Galway. His research work focuses on developing advanced engineering solutions for structural systems, while also providing support on project coordination and reporting. Dr Finnegan is currently working as the NUI Galway lead on BladeLEP and the NUI Galway PI on the H2020 CRIMSON Project, where, previously, he led the EASME-funded LEAPWind Project as the Project Manager, which is industry-led by ÉireComposites and Suzlon for 24 months with a project budget of €1.5 million. Dr Finnegan graduated with a first-class Honours Degree in Civil Engineering in 2009 and a PhD in Civil Engineering in 2013, which examined the ‘wave-structure interaction of offshore wave energy converters’. In recent years, Dr Finnegan has contributed to funded research project proposals, either through leading the writing or collaborating, which have amassed total funding of over €22 million from both national and European sources. To date, Dr Finnegan has published 23 peer-reviewed journal papers and is a Chartered Engineer with Engineers Ireland, where his is the current Chairperson of Engineers Ireland West and was nominated for Chartered Engineer of the Year 2018. Recently, Dr Finnegan won the MaREI Award 2020 for Research Impact.
