UniCoV - Rapid Testing Project

UniCoV is a new multi-site research project coordinated by NUI Galway that explores rapid tests for Covid-19 to develop an early warning system for virus prevention in Irish higher education settings. The aim is to assess rapid testing for COVID-19 and develop an early warning system for outbreaks in universities. Ultimately the findings could prove to be a vital part in the planning for as many students and staff to be back on campus.

WHO can join the study?

All staff members and students (over 18's) are eligible to join the study, even if fully vaccinated.

What does participation involve?

  • Once you sign up, you will be given a participant package with instructions on the next steps
  • There is an online training video on how to perform rapid nasal swab tests and give a saliva sample for PCR testing.
  • Participants will be tested twice a week, with both antigen and saliva PCR testing.
  • Saliva samples must be left at a designated drop off area on the campus Mondays and Thursdays before 11.00am.
  • Participants will be randomly assigned to groups and can be asked to take tests over the course of two or eight weeks.
