The Discipline of Archaeology NUI Galway aims to support communities defending cultural heritage from developments which may have negative impacts.  We see this as part of our core function as a public academic discipline.  Several members of staff receive requests for assistance and advice from the public on a regular basis.  The work of members of staff has been used in legal cases regarding proposed developments and staff members themselves have also made submissions in planning appeals, legal cases and to governments. Some staff work with communities and their organisations in other countries whose heritage is impacted by development, for example in Turkey, the Middle East and Latin America and with immigrant and asylum communities in Europe.  The links below describe some of this work and provide resources which may be useful in other situations.
