Professor Rod Stoneman (Huston School of Film & Digital Media) gave the first lecture in this lecture series on Wednesday January 16.
Film theory should not be a set of esoteric ideas locked in academic institutions. It should be a set of ideas or explorations for all of us living and working in a highly mediated world. It is as relevant to television and the internet as it is to cinema. By looking at extracts from films such as ‘Apocalypse Now’, the Vietnamese film ‘The Wild Field’ and Wikileaks perhaps we can begin to understand a pervasive image system which reiterates power relations, repeating authorized narratives which disclose events deceptively.
