He was a poet, a collector of folklore, and a translator of the work of the great Irish-born philosopher, John Scottus Eriugena. Tom Duddy gives a brief account of Larminie’s life, and then discusses the three areas in which Larminie made a meaningful contribution to Irish cultural life – the collection of the folklore of the West of Ireland, and the advocacy of both Irish poetry and Irish philosophy. Among the works discussed are Larminie’s West Irish Folk-Tales and Romances, his own poetry (including an unpublished poem, ‘From Ullswater to Mayo’), and his translation of the work of John Scottus Eriugena.
