This module examines underlying theories on educational activities and play for babies and children (0-8). The module examines a range of early childhood educational philosophies, including Montessori, HighScope, Reggio Emilia, Steiner, and ‘Play Based’. In addition, the module analyses Aistear: the Early Childhood Curriculum Framework in relation to devising suitable educational activities and play. Application deadline: 1 February.

When you have successfully completed this module you should be able to:

  • Describe the key features of HighScope, Steiner, Montessori, Reggio Emilia and the Play-based approach
  • Explain how these approaches influence your Early Years curriculum Planning
  • Analyse how to apply the Aistear themes, principles and approaches in your curriculum development
  • Explain how the five models examined in Part 1 of the module incorporate the theories of respected leaders in child psychology: Vygotsky, Piaget, Bruner, Skinner, Bronfenbrenner, etc.
  • Analyse how best to improve your curriculum through a range of best practice approaches to planning, observation, and evaluation

Application Requirements

Academic: While formal academic qualifications are not necessary, those possessing a NFQ Level 5 or 6 qualification in the childcare or related disciplines are encouraged to apply

Experiential: Applicants should be employed in an early years setting with a minimum of 2 years experience

Technological: Applicants must have computer proficiency and access to the internet

Age Requirements: Applicants must be over 21
