This module is designed to enable students explore the methodological and practical issues about research. It will help students determine the appropriate research design for research questions in their practice and identify how to source, evaluate and implement evidence in practice.

It will be delivered over 10 weeks using blended learning supported by two and is subdivided into three units:

Unit 1: Back to basics: focuses on the key characteristics of both qualitative and quantitative research methodologies and mixed methods.  Key elements of data collection and rigour in both quantitative and qualitative research are also explored. This unit also helps students to develop clinical questions using the ‘PICO’ approach.

Unit 2: Closer review of Qualitative & Quantitative research: focuses on developing students’ skills of critiquing qualitative and quantitative research studies using CASP and understanding the importance of research guidelines (such as CONSORT), understanding the many non-experimental designs, placing research methodologies in the hierarchy of evidence, sampling and ethical considerations.

Unit 3: Evidence synthesis: focuses on the systematic review process, types of reviews, protocols for systematic reviews qualitative evidence synthesis and scoping reviews. This unit also addresses apprising clinical practice guidelines using AGREE 11 instrument.

Target Market: This module welcomes applications from nurses and midwives irrespective of practice setting.
