Research in Environmental Engineering program places a strong emphasis on both fundamental and applied research and on improving the understanding of the biological, chemical and physical principals of engineered and natural systems. This is achieved through laboratory, pilot-scale and full scale studies along with the development and application of mathematical and computer simulations. Some of the main topics researched include:

  • Development of mathematical models and computer simulations for water and wastewater treatment systems
  • Development of robust, sustainable, low energy technologies
  • Energy efficiency in environmental engineering system
  • Energy from waste
  • Erosion studies and forestry management
  • Microbial kinetics
  • Natural and engineered systems for water and wastewater treatment
  • Odour and gas remediation technologies
  • Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions
  • Remediation of clear-felled sites
  • Water quality
  • Water re-use and resource recovery from wastewater and sludge
  • Water, wastewater and sludge treatment processes (biological, chemical and physical)
