Project Title
Aerodynamic performance of cycling in para-sports
Summary
Para-cyclingis a growing field in both sport and recreational environments. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and wind-tunnel experiments are utilised in this research to explore the aerodynamic characteristics of tandem and hand-cyclists in a competitive sporting environment. An understanding of para-cyclist’s aerodynamics can influence the design of bicycles and equipment, and can improve athletes postures and positions for optimal performance. This research is in collaboration with Paralympics Ireland, Sport Ireland and Cycling Ireland.

Novel methods for the planning and design of greenways for cycling
Summary
The aim was this research was to develop innovate methods to assist the planning and design of greenways (off-road paths) for cycling. These methods included new types of analysis for safety (determinants of perceived risk), design preferences (disaggregated by user characteristics), economic impact (user spending and surplus), and environmental impact (embodied carbon). Data collection and methodological development were distilled into a new planning framework and applied to the Irish National Cycle Network and a case study greenway.

Project Title
Constraints Study and Route Selection Report of National Cycle Network Corridor 2 Mullingar-Oranmore
Summary
This research involved mapping and analysing natural and artificial constraints in the Midlands and West of Ireland with a view to identifying potential inter-urban cycling routes. An innovative framework was then used to select a preferred route corridor across the study area. The research was commissioned and funded by the National Roads Authority and Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.
