Advanced Therapies and Cancers
Advanced Therapies & Cancer (ATC) Clinical Research Group comprises of cell therapy researchers, early phase blood cancer researchers, and cancer researchers synergized with the unified objective to improve patient care and clinical outcomes in regenerative medicine and cancer.
Partnered with scientists at NUI Galway and European cell therapy colleagues, ATC conduct stem cell therapy trials in osteoarthritis, diabetic kidney disease and translational research in specific medical conditions.
Producing cell therapy products for human use is governed by a complex set of regulations. ATC work closely with colleagues within the Galway Blood and Tissue Establishment, Galway University Hospital and scientists within the Regenerative Medicine Institute and the Centre for Cell Manufacturing Ireland in undertaking translational work to advance our understanding and innovation in cell therapy and it role in disease.
Since 2002, with support from the Health Research Board Ireland, the Cancer Clinical Trials Program was developed at Galway University Hospital .Since then,we have conducted clinical trials (Phase 1-4) for a wide range of cancers; breast, colon, pancreas, melanoma, lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukaemias, prostate , lung and renal cancer.
We have established affiliations with National networks such as Cancer Trials Ireland (CTI)www.cancertrials.ie and the Blood Cancer Network Ireland (BCNI) www.bcni.ie and also with large international research groups such as the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP), Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG), European Oncology Research Treatment Group (EORTC),and Medical Research Council UK (MRC) and Industry partners. These collaborations bring with it, a wealth of expertise and novel approaches to our treatment of cancer and opportunities.
Patients benefit from having access to high quality clinical trials and evidence has shown that overall outcomes are better in health systems that support clinical trials1,2..Our goal is to ensure that all patients have equitable access to a diverse portfolio of high-quality, safe and compliant cancer clinical trials in Ireland .We want to align the number of patients participating on cancer trials with the European standard i.e.10%
With Principal Investigators , Research Nurses and Data team ,our research team are excited to continue to push the boundaries of knowledge, medicine and science in making significant contributions to understanding the possibilities for cell therapy and to improving cancer interventions through clinical research
As a research team, we are committed to sharing our knowledge and provide learning opportunities through ATC scholarship program and educational modules, to enable emerging investigators and clinicians a unique opportunity to help shape the future of cancer and cell therapy research
The ATC research group is actively seeking partnerships within the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries and research networks to promote new treatment modalities. We welcome new alliances that can lead to accomplishing this goal.
