Jargon Buster


There are many terms and acronyms commonly used at University of Galway.  This page gives an explanation of some of the common terms that you may have come across at the University.

This is by no means a comprehensive list - have we missed an acronym or term, then email us at servicedesk@nuigalway.ie and we'll add it to the list.

Agresso Agresso is the Financial Management system, used by staff, for web-based purchasing, Purchase-to-Pay and Travel & Subsistence
Akari Akari is a self-service curriculum management portal for Academics
Campus Account Campus Account (IT Account) credentials provide staff access to computing services (other than Agresso and Quercus)
CASS
Campus Account Self Service (CASS) is an online service available at https://cass.nuigalway.ie/ which allows new staff to activate their Campus Account and current staff to reset their Campus Account password.
CMS Content Management System (CMS). A Web support service is used to create, edit and manage officially branded NUI Galway Web sites that are hosted on the University’s Web site hosting service
CORE Companies Online Registration Environment (CORE) - University of Galway payroll and personnel software package
DANte

DANte is a Business Intelligence/Data Analytics solution which has been developed for and by University of Galway. Reports have been developed using the Microsoft PowerBI reporting tool in a number of key areas to support strategic decision making – and also some useful daily functions - for University staff. DANte offers a single University of Galway facility for both tabular and attractive visual reporting based on a range of data sources including student and staff records (Quercus & CoreHR), financial data (Agresso) and some data from other systems including Blackboard and Wi-Fi records.  Some reports integrate data from a range of sources.

Discoverer 

Discoverer is a reporting tool that allows staff to create/extract reports from the following systems, Student Records (Quercus), Payroll and CORE HR System and Finance System (Agresso) 

eduroam

eduroam (Educational Roaming) facilitates roaming educational users obtaining wireless internet access with their laptops at other member sites by authenticating with the user credentials they normally use at their home location. See www.eduroam.iefor more information on member sites

EPO Agent

 ePolicy Orchestrator Agent ISS make use of an anti-virus management system called McAfee ePolicy Orchestrator (EPO) to remotely monitor anti-virus software on Windows computers connected to the campus network. In the event of a virus outbreak, updates can be downloaded to client machines and infected computers identified.

Ethernet/MAC Address

Ethernet hardware address (EHA) / media access control address (MAC address) or physical address is a unique identifier for a device (e.g. PC, Printer) assigned for communications on the physical network.  MAC addresses assigned by the manufacturer 

FileSender FileSender is a secure way to share large files with anyone. The purpose of the software is to send a large file to someone, have that file available for download for a certain number of downloads and/or a certain amount of time, and after that automatically delete the file
Firewall A firewall is a software program or piece of hardware that helps screen out hackers, viruses, and worms that try to reach your computer over the Internet
Hardware Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer such as a monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive disk (HDD), system unit (graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard and chips), etc.

ICT Information and communications technology (I.C.T.)
IMEI The IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) is the unique electronic serial number of a mobile phone
IP Address
IP stands for Internet Protocol. An IP address is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) is designed to allow one computer (or other digital devices) to communicate with another via the Internet. IP addresses allow the location of literally billions of digital devices that are connected to the Internet to be pinpointed and differentiated from other devices.

Jura

Academic Web Services (Jura) provides a range of services to staff and students, mostly relating to exam timetables, papers and results

Network Storage All users are allocated disk space on the network servers. This space is referred to as your U: Drive and can be used to store your files from one session to another
Online Payslips (Employee Self Service)  CORE, University of Galway payroll and personnel software package - which allows permanent staff to see their payslips online
Phishing
Spam & Phishing is an attempt to fraudulently acquire sensitive information, such as username, password and banking details, by masquerading as a trustworthy organisation or individual in an email message. 
P2P

The Purchase-to-Payment cycle is also known as P2P and encompasses a complete electronic route from ordering through to payment i.e., providing for electronic ordering (eOrdering), electronic invoicing (eInvoicing) and electronic payment (ePayment).

Quercus Student Records (Quercus) is the student records system used in University of Galway by administrative/academic staff to edit/view student records
SMTP Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP) is an Internet standard for electronic mail (email) transmission
SPAM Email spam, also known as "bulk email" or "junk email," is a subset of spam that involves nearly identical messages sent to numerous recipients by email
T4 CMS Terminal 4 is the Content Management System (CMS) used in University of Galway. This is a web support service used for editing, creating and management of officially branded University of Galway Web sites that are hosted on the University’s Web site hosting service. 
Ticketing System The Service Desk ticketing system is a web-based service designed to support you. It provides an easy way for you to request assistance from Information Solutions and Services, to find answers to your IT questions, and helps to resolve your computing problems as quickly as possible. Using the Service Desk ticketing system, you can quickly and easily send an inquiry for help on a problem or issue
VoIP
Voice over Internet Protocol. A phone service over the Internet
WiFi WiFi is a local area wireless technology that allows an electronic device to exchange data or connect to the internet
ZIP format
Compressing files, Zip files make it easy to keep related files together and make transporting, emailing, downloading and storing data and software faster and more efficient. The ZIP format is the most popular compression format used in the Windows environment, and WinZip is the most popular compression utility
