All applicants, whose first language is not English, must present one of the following qualifications in the English language.

  • Temporary measure for 2020 only in response to COVID-19
  • Visa Required Students: The Department of Justice and Equality has approved Duolingo English Test for visa application purposes. Please check with The Irish Naturalisation and Immigration Service (INIS) for specific visa requirements.   
  • Non-Visa Required Students: We are awaiting approval from the Registration Office on Duolingo being recognised. We expect to have an update in the coming days.

Programme Specific English Language Requirement:

  • Shannon College of Hotel Management’s Bachelor of Business Studies and Bachelor of Commerce in International Hotel Managementis as follows: requires a minimum overall score of 6 IELTS. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 95-100.
    • International Foundation Business Programme requires a minimum overall score of 5 IELTS. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 75-80.
  • BSc in Speech and Language Therapy is as follows:  requires a minimum overall score of 7 IELTS, with no less than 6.5 in the components. If using TOEFL, the equivalent requirement is 95. If using Pearson PTE, the equivalent requirement is 67. If using Cambridge C1 or C2 Advanced (CAE), the requirement is 185 overall. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 120.
  • MA (Journalism) 1AJ1 is as follows:  requires a minimum overall score of 6.5 IELTS, with no less than 6.0 in the components. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 110.
  • MA (Global Media & Communications) 1GMC1 is as follows: requires a minimum overall score of 7.0 IELTS, with no less than 6.5 in the components. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 120.
  • MSc Computer Science - Data Analytics 1 year full-time, 1CSD1, and the MSc Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence 1 year full-time, 1MAI1, is as follows:
    Entry to these programmes requires a minimum overall score of 6.5 IELTS, with  no less than 6.5 in the writing ability band and no less than 6.0 in the other bands. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 110.
  • MSc Biomedical Science 1MV1, MSc Biotechnology 1MT1, and the Higher Diploma (Medical Technology Regulatory Affairs and Quality) 1MTD1, the IELTS entry requirements are as follows: Entry to these programmes require a minimum overall score of 6.5 IELTS, with no less than 6.0 in any one band. If using Duolingo, the equivalent requirement is a score of 110.

Note for September 2020 intake only: NUI Galway and the Department of Justice will accept language tests taken no more than three years prior to the commencement of your programme. Language tests must normally be taken no more than two years prior to commencement of your programme at the University.

Foundation Programmes

National University of Ireland, Galway works with a number of providers who offer foundation programmes for students who do not currently meet the University’s English language requirements.

The following courses are open to students who receive a conditional offer of admission to a select number of undergraduate and taught postgraduate degree programmes at NUI Galway, subject to meeting the University’s usual English language requirements.

Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC)

Based in Dublin, the Dublin International Foundation College (DIFC) delivers specialised NCUK –accredited foundation courses preparing international students for entrance into partner universities in Ireland and the UK. In particular, NUI Galway has accepted students who have completed the NCUK International Foundation Year (IFY) and NCUK Graduate Diploma (formerly the Pre-Masters programme – PMP) at DIFC.
