Please note that you can only arrange health insurance with an Irish Health Insurance Provider when you are living in Ireland. However,  Study & Protect Medical Insurance  (see below)  can be purchased online before travelling to Ireland. we strongly advise that all students coming from a visa required country should purchase health cover before arriving in the country.

The Health Insurance Authority is a statutory regulator of the private health insurance market in Ireland. The Authority also provides information to consumers regarding their rights and health insurance plans and benefits.

Health Insurance for Immigration Purposes

Non-EU students are required to show proof of comprehensive medical insurance when registering with the Garda National Immigration Bureau. Proof of medical insurance is also required when applying for a student visa.

Study & Protect Medical Insurance

Study & Protect Medical Insurance is a medical expenses insurance policy available exclusively to students travelling to Ireland from overseas to undertake a course of study at an approved educational establishment. This can be purchased online before travelling to Ireland.

  • The policy provides cover for medical expenses incurred whilst in Ireland arising from any accident or any illness requiring hospitalisation to a limit of €2,500,000 during the period of insurance. 
  • Study & Protect Medical Insurance does not provide cover for any pre-existing illness known to the insured person at the time of purchase, nor does it cover pregnancy costs while in Ireland.

Non-EEA Student’s Personal Accident & Medical Cover

Halligan Insurance have an official Medical & Personal Accident insurance policy for all non-EEA Students applying for a VISA.
A main requirement for all non-EEA Students is to have a Medical & Personal Accident Insurance Policy in order to obtain a VISA.
