Qiaoyan Lai - Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting

Qiaoyan Lai

Why did you choose NUI Galway? "I was a student of Shannon College of Hotel Management, and I want to study advanced accounting, that’s why I transfer to NUIG in my last year."

What was your first day at University like? "NUIG is different with Shannon College, NUIG is larger and have more students. I can not find my class and lost in campus in my first day, haha. But I was still excited and looking forward my University life."

How did you find NUI Galway? "Lecturers are very nice and helpful, and library provide all material that I need. I am very enjoying in studying in NUIG. Although course is not easy, and I maybe lost balance sometimes at first. But I find my way with lecturers’ and friends’ help. I satisfied with my study result in the end, and what is more important is, I really learned something in NUIG, which will have long impact in my life."

Irish culture in 3 words? "Peace, Happy, and Drink!"  Galway in 3 words? "Beautiful, Wind and Rain!"

— Qiaoyan Lai, Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting

Yuwei Li - MEconSc International Finance

Yuwei Li

"The best things about Ireland coming across my mind are its fantastic music, the lucky green colour, and lovely people, especially in Galway. Even though sometimes the weather is dramatically changeable, the sceneries and the passion of people for life are never disappointing.

I'm studying a Masters in International Finance, which provides me lots of opportunities to explore deep and wide information behind the global financial markets, learn the lessons from the classic or special cases, acquire more helpful skills in analysing the data set with advanced software and facilities, and cooperate with other students in the group projects and also attend some useful seminars which inspire us practically in this area. Moreover, the professors are patient and kind to every student wherever you come from, if you have any problems, just ask."

— Yuwei Li, MEconSc International Finance, from China

Lao Suining - Business

Lao Suining

I am studying Accounting at NUI Galway. When I first came to Galway, I felt that it was the most serenely beautiful city I had ever seen! During my first year, the teachers were all so professional and thoughtful towards us.

In my spare time, I joined some societies and clubs which I was interested in and participated in many fantastic events. This was a great way to meet new people and exchange experiences with other students.

— Lao Suining, Undergraduate Student, China

Jia Wang - PhD Student

Jia Wang

The first thing that attracted me to NUI Galway was the great reputation of the Irish Centre for Human Rights, the only centre of its kind in the world. Human Rights Law is a hugely important area both in terms of international law and international relations. I chose to study this subject in order to help improve human rights and promote the humanitarian concerns in the official and civil life in China.

With its excellent facilities and professional and international environment, NUI Galway is the perfect place to do this. NUI Galway is a lovely place with lovely people. I would certainly recommend NUI Galway and Ireland to other international students. Galway boasts a great combination of people, culture and literature, not to mention Irish music!

Guo Jia - Landscape Archaeology

Guo Jia

‌I was fortunate enough to receive the Joint-Governmental Scholarship from China and Ireland and to find the unique course in Landscape Archaeology at NUI Galway. The excellent standard of education in the MA Landscape Archaeology provides advanced archaeological theoretical research methodology and academic practice.

The professional and competent approach to teaching directs me in my understanding of the archaeology and anthropology of both western and eastern cultures. The development of deep understanding of Landscape Archaeology will promote cultural acceptance among divergent ethnic populations in China, and point to ways in which we can protect our shared cultural heritage in its landscape setting.

NUI Galway offers an international and positive atmosphere in a beautiful environment, the staff at all levels fulfil their responsibilities to each student. The city of Galway is such a nice place with a rich historical and cultural atmosphere. The study and life here will provide the chances to discover the splendours of the natural landscape, and to experience the authentic Irish culture.

Guo Jia, Landscape Archaeology

Qiong Wu - PhD in Industrial Engineering

Qiong Wu

"My name is Qiong Wu and I am currently completing a PhD in Industrial Engineering at NUI Galway. My reasons for choosing my course lies in my tutor, who is very professional and responsible; so her reputation in this area of study and the opportunity to learn from her brought me here. As for NUIG, it is an authentic English teaching university and it is very international in terms of students and staff! My first day at NUI Galway was fantastic. At that time, we had group meeting where people introduced themselves related to country, hobby, study area and then discussed about one specific topic with their own opinion. This kind of brainstorm benefit me a lot. My highlight of my study is project management in college of engineering. During my research, I collected data from industries based in Ireland, therefore, practices are very informant and useful for project managers. If I was to describe Irish culture in 3 words, they would be friendly, colorful, inclusive; and Galway city in 3 words would be vibrant, excellent, comfortable. The advantages of studying this topic in NUI Galway and in Ireland comparing to other countries is that the industries in Ireland have unique culture that contributes to my study so that I can collect real data and analyse them under this kind of background. In summary, NUI Galway is a place where you can get professional knowledge, wonderful scenery, colorful activities, interesting Irish culture and lots of friends from all over the world."

— Qiong Wu, PhD in Industrial Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Kathryn Cormican

Bo Chen - PhD in Disability Law and Policy

Bo Chen

I chose NUI Galway because of its unique Centre for Disability Law and Policy (CDLP). When I was working on disability rights in China, most reports and articles we read could be traced back to the CDLP! Only a few universities in the world have specialised programmes on disability law, and the CDLP has an extraordinary history of law reform advocacy worldwide.

As a research student, I appreciated the support from the university from day one. The induction was very clear and informative, and there were also a series of events about funding and other academic supports afterwards.
