International Law and Conflict
Conflict and Post Conflict (Law of Politics) LW470
This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the dynamics of intra-state conflict and provide an understanding of the legal, political and structural underpinnings that sustain conflict. During the course, students will evaluate the emerging issues and challenges confronting HRL and IHL, including challenges posed by the remnants of the ‘war on terror’ discourse. The module will focus on two particular conflicts: Northern Ireland and Israel/Palestine by unpacking the complexities imminent in them and seeking to provide direction as to the relevant outstanding post-conflict issues.
Format: The module will be taught by weekly seminars conducted over three hours. Students will be given an outline of each seminar and a bibliography to correspond with the various issues to be analysed during a given seminar. They will be encouraged to express their understanding/views on these issues.
Semester: 2
ECTS: 15
Lecturer: Dr. Kathleen Cavanaugh
Learning Outcomes: By the end of the course, student will:
- Be able to understand and evaluate existing legal structures within which conflicts occur
- Be able to analyse and critically assess the nuances of each separate conflict through the prism of legal and political realities
- Be able to comprehend the routes available toward conflict resolution, highlighting existing lacunae within the law.
