Research Summary

Research in the School of Health Sciences encompasses the areas of Health Promotion, Occupational Therapy, Podiatric Medicine and Speech and Language Therapy. Current research in the School is aligned with the University research thematic priorities of Biomedical Science and Engineering and Applied Social Science and Public Policy.

The Health Promotion Research Centre (HPRC), the only designated research centre in Ireland dedicated to health promotion, produces, disseminates and translates high-quality research of national and international significance that supports the development of best practice and policy in the promotion of health. The Centre has an active multidisciplinary research programme in place and undertakes independent and commissioned research work across the areas of population health research, health services research, health promotion programme development and evaluation and health policy research. The Centre collaborates with regional, national and international practitioners, policy makes and agencies, including the European Commission and the WHO, on the development and evaluation of health promotion initiatives, in line with international best practice. The Centre plays a strategic role in supporting both national and international capacity building for health promotion research.  To date, the Centre has attracted circa €13 million of external research funding and is currently being approved for designation as a World Health Organization Collaborating Centre.
