Welcome to the Discipline Pathology
Pathology is the study of the mechanisms of disease and bridges clinical practice and basic science. In the last decade, the practice of pathology has been transformed by advances in molecular genomics that have led to the emergence of the field of molecular pathology and diagnostics. In clinical medicine today, pathology plays a central role in the diagnosis, treatment and monitoring therapeutic response across a wide range of subspecialties, most notably cancer. Pathology is an integral part of the teaching programme of the School of Medicine at NUI Galway, and has been since its inception. We deliver student-focused education to undergraduate medical and biomedical engineering students at NUI Galway. As a recognised centre for postgraduate training in histopathology, we provide academic training and research opportunities for medical graduates who wish to pursue a career in the field of pathology and its cognate disciplines. The Discipline has an active and internationally recognised research programme in basic and translational cancer that focuses on breast, prostate and colon cancer. Our research takes a multidisciplinary approach combining basic science, pathology, clinical oncology and molecular epidemiology. We provide a highly supportive environment for postgraduates whether they are registered for a MD, MSc or PhD. We welcome national and international students to apply to pursue a postgraduate research qualification with us.
