Edel Doherty is a Senior Lecturer/ Associate Professor in Economics at the J.E. Cairnes School of Business and Economics and she is a member of the Centre for Economic Research in Inclusivity and Sustainability (CERIS). Her research is focused on the application of discrete choice experiments, economic evaluation and econometrics in Health and Environmental Economics. She has published across a range of areas and she is particularly interested in exploring the socio-economic drivers of health, health inequalities and preferences for health and environmental goods. Her work to date has been published in a number of leading international peer-reviewed journals such as Social Science and Medicine, the Journal of Economic Behaviour and Organisation, Health Affairs, Economics and Human Biology, European Review of Agricultural Economics and the Journal of Agricultural Economics.  Since joining the University of Galway, Edel has participated in a number of successful European and National research funding applications to the value of over 4 million euro. Previously Edel worked at Queen's University Belfast and she was a visiting scholar to UC Berkeley in 2009 and Simon Fraser University in 2019.

Edel was the Director of the B.Comm Global Experience Programme from 2016 to 2023. Since January 2023, Edel is the Associate Head for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion for the School of Business and Economics.

Research Interests

My research interests lie in applied health economics research and I have also undertaken a number of applied studies in the area of environmental economics.  I am interested in the application of microeconometrics and the discrete choice experiment methodology to address issues primarily in health and environment. In health economics, I have used microeconometric techniques to examine issues related to burden of disease, particularly around healthcare usage and the cost of illness, health inequalities and social exclusion.   I have worked on projects in the areas of obesity, chronic pain, vaccinations, dementia, mental health and population health. In environmental economics, I have mainly used non-market valuation methods, particularly discrete choice experiments, to examine preferences in areas such as recreation, water quality and agri-environment schemes.
