Biography

Fiona’s PhD (Kemmy Business School, University of Limerick, 2010) is in the area of leadership and gender; specifically, she examined the role congruity theory of prejudice towards female leaders. Prior to that, she completed an MBS (IR and HRM) at UL, having previously completed the CIPD Diploma in HRM.  Fiona’s undergraduate qualifications include a BA (French and Sociology and Politics) from UCG and a Diploma in Business Studies, at GMIT. 
Having worked for several years in industry, Fiona started lecturing in GMIT in 2001 on the CIPD Diploma and then joined the Discipline of Management (at NUIG) in 2002 to teach on the Management Skills module (a skills based course developed for 2nd Year Commerce students).  In 2003 she created a similar module for the Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development (NUIG) called Life Skills for Success, a version of which has since been included in the 1st Year Commerce programme. 
In 2003, Fiona began lecturing on the MBA programme in the SBE and from then, Fiona’s contributions expanded across the Discipline of Management.  Since that time, she has
taught, designed and managed several management-, business- and skill-development modules to postgraduate, undergraduate, socio-economically disadvantaged students and adult learners in the SBE, the Centre for Adult Learning and Professional Development and Student Services. 
Fiona’s research interests and peer reviewed publications are in the areas of leadership and gender, prejudice and stereotyping and gendered language in the workplace.  An evolving area of interest for Fiona is focussed on vulnerability and relational transparency in authentic leadership of self and others.  A co-operative model of leadership, where experience is leveraged between academics, professionals, students and our communities and is underpinned and informed by humility, self awareness, vulnerability and courage is central to Fiona’s research and practice. 
A recipient of the National Teaching Hero Award, 2020, Fiona strives to infuse her classes with innovative and creative methods of teaching, reflection, learning and assessment. 
Her interest in the interplay between an aspirational-operational model with leadership of self and others, has led to Fiona’s development of what she calls a ‘courageous classroom’, where she attempts to create a space for students in which they are encouraged and facilitated to reflect, discuss and practice.

Teaching Interests

Fiona is the recipient of the National Teaching Hero 2020 award.  The student-nominated award is the run by the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching & Learning in Higher Education.  

The Teaching Hero Awards are Ireland’s only national, student-led awards for all those who teach in higher education.  The Awards are organised by the National Forum in collaboration with the Union of Students in Ireland and other students’ unions nationwide. They provide an opportunity for students across the country to recognise and celebrate outstanding teaching in our higher education institutions.
Teaching Heroes are nominated by individual students, who submit a short personal piece that explains why the person is their ‘Teaching Hero’.  Based on student nominations, all Teaching Heroes receive national recognition
