Summary
I study the dynamics of learning and decision making; that is, how people adapt to the situations they find themselves in.  My lab uses novel data collection techniques (e.g., eye tracking and computer mouse tracking) and complex data analyses to explore these topics.

Click here to see some of my research on deception at the FAKE lab exhibition at Science Gallery Dublin.

My work on learning and decision making addresses issues in the basic neural processes underlying perception and decision making, the integration of decision-related information into action, and making effective decisions in everyday highly complex environments, especially in relation to pro-environmental behaviour and safety.

Consequently, I am a member of the Brain and Behaviour research stream in the School of Psychology. I am a member of the Galway Neuroscience Centre and the Ryan Institute for sustainability. I also work with the Data Science Institute at NUI Galway and the Whitaker Institute.

Basic Research
My research is an attempt to answer two questions, "Why do we do what we do?" and "How do we do what we do?" The "Why" question is one of motivation. I am particularly interested in what motivates our behaviour and how that changes depending on the circumstances we are in. The "How" question is one of behaviour dynamics, or how behaviour changes over time.

I am an experimental psychologist, so I use tightly controlled environments to identify features of situations that help us learn or influence our decisions.  My interest in dynamics, or change over time, stems for the fact that the manner in which people adapt to their circumstances is an important but often overlooked aspect of human behaviour.

My lab uses novel data collection techniques (e.g., eye tracking and computer mouse tracking) to explore these topics by having participants play learning and/or decision making games. We also use complex analyses of behavioural and neural measures (nonlinear time series).

Applied Interests
In addition to my laboratory research, I collaborate with other scientists and professionals to apply my research in a variety of settings, from farming to computer gaming. For example, I work with farmers to improve farm safety and sustainable farming, I work with engineers to develop usable hardware and software solutions and with scientist-practitioners on applications of psychology for individuals with mental health issues or developmental disabilities.

(2017) European Group for Process Tracing Studies in Decision Making,
O'Hora, D. (2017) The EGPROC meeting is an annual gathering of researchers interested in process tracing research in the area of Judgment and Decision Making where participants present and discuss recent research and ideas in an open and relatively informal atmosphere. Process tracing approaches include eye tracking, mouse cursor tracking, verbal protocols, neurological correlates of decision making to name a few. Such approaches are technical, so, in addition to presenting the latest advances in the field, the meeting aims to facilitate the transfer of best practice and ¿lab lore¿ across laboratories to support the development of the next generation of process tracing researchers. [Conference Organising Committee Chairperson], European Group for Process Tracing Studies in Decision Making, Galway , 22-JUN-17 - 24-JUN-17. [Details]
(2013) Dynamics of Social Behaviour: An introduction to novel quantitative techniques to record and analyse social behaviour online and offline,
Denis O'Hora, Jon Freeman (Dartmouth College), Chris Kello (UC Merced), Fred Cummins (UCD), Maciej Dabrowski (DERI), Davdi Crowley (DERI) (2013) Human behaviour is fundamentally social. Even when isolated, our concerns relate to the concerns of others and are articulated through a language created with others. The quantitative analysis of social behaviour raises some particular difficult challenges, with the result that much behavioural science focuses on the behaviour of single individuals in isolation. Recent advances in computing and mathematics provide new avenues through which to record, characterise and analyse social behaviour. These advances allow us to conceive of novel metaphors that can be applied to human social behaviour; detailed models that are carefully constructed and tested. This workshop will focus on novel dynamical models of human social cognition and behaviour and specifically on techniques to capture complex human activity and to quantitatively analyse it.
