Biography

Dr. Daniel Coakley is a senior post-doctoral researcher at the National University of Ireland, Galway. He received his B.E. in Civil Engineering from NUI Galway in 2009 and was subsequently awarded a PhD scholarship by the College of Engineering and Informatics (CoEI) at NUI Galway. In 2014, Daniel received his PhD in Mechanical Engineering for his work on the “Calibration of Detailed Building Energy Simulation Models to Measured Data using Uncertainty Analysis”, supervised by Dr. Padraig Molloy and Dr. Marcus Keane.

Daniel has also worked as a junior consulting engineer on large civil projects in Ireland and Northern Ireland, working with TMA Consulting Engineers, Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. and RPS Group Plc. Since joining the Informatics Research Unit for Sustainable Engineering (IRUSE) in 2012, he has worked as a research assistant and post-doctoral researcher on a range of national and European projects, including:

  • ITOBO (06/2012-09/2012): SFI Strategic Research cluster - “Information and Communication Technology for Sustainable and Optimised Building Operation”
  • I2E2 AWE (09/2012-04/2014): Enterprise Ireland funded national centre for energy efficient technologies - “Development of an automated fault detection and diagnosis (AFDD) system commercial air-handling units (AHU’s)”
  • WATERNOMICS (05/2014-Present): EU FP7 project - “ICT for water resource efficiency”

He is also actively engaged in research activities with the IRUSE group and external collaborators. He has worked on proposal writing for national and European research project funding, securing over €90k funding through Enterprise Ireland and the Irish Research Council in 2014. He has a strong publication record, with 3 journal publications and 16 peer-reviewed national and international conference publications. He has also acted as a reviewer for a number of journals including Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews (IF 5.510), Applied Energy (5.261), Automation in Construction (IF 1.822), Energies (IF 1.602) and Energy Efficiency (0.961).

In May 2014, Daniel was appointed as an adjunct lecturer within the Dept. of Civil Engineering. This role involves teaching of various engineering modules to undergraduate students in civil, mechanical and energy systems engineering, as well as supervision of post-graduate students. His teaching and research interests include:

  • Fault Detection and Diagnosis (FDD)
  • Building Management and Control Systems (BMS / BMCS)

  • Sensors and Instrumentation
  • Building design and control optimisation

Daniel has a breadth of expertise in: building energy simulation tools (E+), data acquisition and storage systems (SCADA, SQL), building management and control systems (Cylon, Trend, Honeywell), programming (Java, Visual Basic), sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, design optimisation (jEPlus), statistical data analysis and visualisation (R, Minitab, Excel) and risk and uncertainty quantification.

Daniel is currently a member of Engineers Ireland (MIEI), International Building Performance Simulation Association (IBPSA), Energy Institute (GradEI), Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), Association of Energy Engineers (AEE), American Society of Heating Refrigeration and Air-conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), Institute of Civil Engineers (ICE), Institute of Structural Engineers (IStructE). He is also qualified as a Certified Energy Manager (CEM).
