Biography

Dr. Karl Mason is a permanent lecturer in the School of Computer Science at the National University of Ireland Galway.

Prior to this, he was a postdoctoral research fellow on an EPSRC funded project at Cardiff University, UK. Here, he worked on modelling investment behaviour in the GB electricity sector using agent based modelling. In 2018, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the Georgia Institute of Technology, USA in collaboration with Sandia National Laboratories and funded in part by the National Science Foundation. His work primarily consisted of applying deep learning to detect solar panel installations from smart meter data and to estimate their size, tilt and azimuth. Between 2015 and 2018, he completed his PhD thesis at the National University of Ireland, Galway. His PhD research primarily consisted of developing methods to evolve neural networks and to apply these algorithms within the energy sector for tasks such as: wind generation forecasting, electricity generation dispatch, etc. This PhD dissertation was nominated for the 2018 European AI PhD Dissertation award.

His research interests include: neural networks, evolutionary computing, reinforcement learning and multi-agent systems. His research also includes applications of machine learning methods to problems including: renewable energy, smart homes, infrastructure planning, smart grid, robotics and cloud computing. He regularly reviews papers for top journals and serves on the program committee and senior program committee for multiple leading AI conferences, including: AAAI, AAMAS, ECAI and IJCAI. He is a guest editor in the forthcoming special issue on Evolutionary Machine Learning for The Knowledge Engineering Review journal, published by Cambridge University Press.
