Biography

Dr. Stefan Lohfeld is a senior research engineer in Mechanical and Biomedical Engineering at NUI Galway. He obtained his German Diploma in Production Engineering (comparable to Masters Degree in Ireland) at the University of Bremen. He then went on to the Karl-Winnacker-Institut der DECHEMA e.V. (now "Dechema Forschungsinstitut") in Frankfurt, Germany, to perform his research on high temperature oxidation of intermetallic phases and received his PhD degree in the area of materials science from the Rheinisch-Westfälische Technische Hochschule (RWTH) in Aachen, Germany. In 2002 Stefan joined the NCBES at NUI, Galway to work on an Enterprise Ireland RIF project. Subsequently, he managed the research activities at NUI Galway for the "STEPS" EU FP6 project and manufactured bone tissue engineering scaffolds using rapid prototyping techniques. He then received funding of approx. €710,000 from the Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund for four consecutive projects on the development of novel implants for knee damage and spinal instrumentations. Subsequently, he won a EU FP7 Marie Curie International Outgoing Fellowship with funding of €245,000, which is partially performed at the University of Kansas.
His early research efforts were focused on materials of several groups and he is experienced with mechanical testing and the materials behaviour in corrosive and oxidising media as outlined below:
-          mechanical testing of ceramic and polymeric compounds
-          heat treatment of titanium and titanium alloys in nitriding atmospheres
-          corrosion behaviour of screw joints for magnesium and aluminium parts
-          characterisation of thermal barrier coatings for gas turbines
-          high temperature oxidation behaviour of reinforced intermetallic phases
 
Dr. Lohfeld expanded his knowledge with his current activities including project management, CAD design, computational analysis and rapid prototyping production technology. For the EU FP6 project "STEPS" he has developed a number of scaffolds for long bone tissue engineering fabricated via Selective Laser Sintering from the biodegradable polymer polycaprolactone (PCL) and PCL/tricalciumphosphate composites. His Enterprise Ireland Commercialisation Fund funded research was on the development of a novel multiphase implant to replace damaged cartilage in joints including a delivery system, and his more recent research activity was to develop an novel implant for spinal instrumentation.
In Summer 2013 he went on an invited visit at the University of Kansas, USA, to work with Prof. Michael Detamore on 3D printing of tissue engineering scaffolds. This first visit was later followed by the outgoing phase of his Marie Curie Fellowship from August 2014 to July 2015, where he acquired knowledge on tissue engineering for the temporomandibular joint and worked on 3D printing of TE scaffolds with microspheres.
