Biography

Charlotte McIvor is a Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor in Drama and Theatre Studies as well as one of the co-founders of Active* Consent, an Irish international research-led consent education programme based at the University of Galway.

In addition to her work appearing in multiple journals and edited collections, she is the author of Contemporary Irish Theatre: Histories and Theories (with Ian R. Walsh, forthcoming 2024), Migration and Performance in Contemporary Ireland: Towards A New Interculturalism, and the co-editor of The Methuen Companion to Interculturalism and Performance (with Daphne P. Lei), Interculturalism and Performance Now: New Directions? (with Jason King), Devised Performance in Irish Theatre: Histories and Contemporary Practice (with Siobhán O'Gorman) and Staging Intercultural Ireland: Plays and Practitioner Perspectives (with Matthew Spangler). Her work has also appeared in Theatre Research International, Theatre Topics, Modern Drama, Irish University Review, Irish Studies Review, and multiple edited collections. 

For Active* Consent, she created, directed and lead their original research-based theatre project from 2014-2023 which led to three national tours and counting of this continually evolving devised theatre project which has involved Drama and Theatre Studies students and alumni working professionally in the creative industries as collaborators.  She also led out on the creation of Active* Consent's Consent Hub, commissioned by the Government of Ireland, the world's first publicly funded consent hub as well as taking creative lead on multiple social media campaigns including "Start Here" (2021, in partnership with the Union of Students in Ireland and Galway Rape Crisis Centre) and "Consent is for Everyone" (2022).  She currently serves as the Treasurer for the Association of Theatre in Higher Education and is a board member of Baboró, the Galway-based International Arts Festival for Children.  


She is available to supervise PhDs in the area of contemporary theatre and performance in Ireland, the United States and beyond with particular specialisation in Performance Studies, interculturalism, critical race theory, postcolonial/decolonial theory, gender, sexuality and consent studies, as well as educational and applied theatre and practice-as-research methodologies.
