Biography

Dr Frances McCormack (she/her/hers) holds a BA from Maynooth, an MA in Old and Middle English Language and Literature from UCD, an MA in Academic Practice from NUI Galway, and a PhD from Trinity College Dublin, as well as Diplomas in Irish and Spanish. Her PhD was fully funded by the Irish Council for the Humanities and Social Sciences (now the IRC) for the duration of the programme. 

Frances is also a multi-award-winning teacher.  In 2010, she won the President's Award for Teaching Excellence from NUI Galway; in 2011, the National Award for Excellence in Teaching; in 2015, NUI Galway's President's Award for Teaching Excellence; in 2020, she won a College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies Teaching Excellence Award, as well as the President's Award for Teaching Excellence, and in 2021 she won the Teaching Hero Award from the National Forum for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. She is the first (and to date only) member of staff in the University to win the President's Award for Teaching Excellence three times.

Frances spent four years as Vice-Dean of Learning and Assessment in the College of Arts, Social Sciences and Celtic Studies and is now working on a range of Equality, Diversity, Inclusion, and Progression initiatives across the University, including serving as the EDIP Officer for the School as well as being a University of Sanctuary Mentor and member of the University of Sanctuary Committee, and part of the LGBT+ Ally Network. 

With a breadth of research interests and publications on from Old English emotions to modernist literature, Frances is particularly interested in literary representations of emotions and is currently working on a series of articles on emotions in Finnegans Wake. She has served as the secretary of Teachers of Old English in Britain and Ireland, directed the MA in English, and is currently co-directing the MA in Medieval and Antiquity.
