Maria's initial career post was as a teacher of the deaf, working first in a large school for the deaf in Liverpool before moving onto integrating deaf children into mainstream education in Leicestershire, England. She then spent over two years with Voluntary Services Overseas working on education of the deaf on the island of Bali, Indonesia. Maria is a graduate of the University of Liverpool, University of Manchester and of Trinity College Dublin. She holds the degrees of B.Ed. and M.Ed in education, audiology and hearing impairment with higher diplomas in education of the deaf and in counselling.
