I am a graduate of UCG/NUIG (BA in German and Spanish 1988, MA in German Literature 1993, Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education: Academic Practice 2007).
Before that I studied at the Pädagogische Fachhochschule (Munich) where I obtained the Higher Diploma in Special Needs Education and a Diploma in Montessori Teaching. Before joining the German Department, NUI Galway, I worked as a German teacher in Colaiste Einde (Galway) and the Galway, Mayo Institute of Technology (GMIT) as well as a number of German multinationals like Siemens, BMW and Deutsche Bank in the role of business administrator and translator.
Since 1996 I am the programme director, lecturer and Erasmus co-ordinator of the German component of the B.Comm. International (German) degree course. I also teaches Business modules for Arts students as well as Language Learning Strategies/Skills to Succeed for first year students.
In 2004 I was appointed NUI Galway's extern examiner (German) for the Shannon College of Hotel Management (SCHM) and in 2005 I was awarded the NUIG President’s Award for Teaching Excellence.
I am currently working on a research project on ’Collaboration, ICT and blended learning in the MFL classroom’.
- The use of digital technologies for language learning and teaching
- Social media and 'connectivity' in the MFL classroom
- Language learning strategies and environments
- German social & economic history (1871-present)
- The writings of J.K. Rowling & Cornelia Funke
