Biography

My principal interests lie in intellectual property: patents, ethics, morality and biotechnological inventions in particular and I have recently published a book on this area. Other research and teaching interests of mine include land law, sociology of law and vegetarianism/veganism. I hold degrees from several different universities and jurisdictions, in reverse chronological order, as follows: PhD, University of Edinburgh, 2017. The title of the thesis was "Morality Patently Matters: The Case for a Universal Suffrage for Morally Controversial Biotechnological Patents"; PG Cert. HE, University of the West of England, Bristol; Research LLM, University of Warwick and the title was "The Linux Operating System: A Socio-Legal Study"; BCL, University College Cork; BA in English and Philosophy, UCC.

My teaching career began in Spain where I taught T.E.F.L. for five years. After completing my BCL, I taught on the Property Law course at Warwick University for three years and later took up a lectureship in the University of the West of England, Bristol. There I continued teaching Property Law, eventually becoming module leader of that course. I also taught on the Cyber Law course and introduced a course on the LL.M. in Commercial Law, entitled “Software Licensing and Legislation”. I was appointed as a lecturer at NUI, Galway in 2006 and served as Interim Head of School from 2008 to 2009.

I supervise four Ph.D. students in areas which span biotechnological patents, open source software, land law and animal rights. I also sit on the University’s Ethics Committee and have been Programme Director of the BCL, as well as having been Director of the BA in Public and Social Policy from 2013-2016.

Modules Taught

Term/Year Module Title Module Code Subject / Desc
1/2013 Sociology of Law LW220 This course takes a law in context approach to the subject matter. It comprises a mixture of theory and case studies, critically evaluating legal initiatives in socially topical and relevant areas. The course is interdisciplinary and seeks to evaluate the law from a realistic, rather than an idealistic, perspective.
1/2013 Publishing Law: Theory and Practice EN593 This course is offered to Masters students on the MA in Publishing and Literature in the English Department. It does not assume any previous legal knowledge but guides students through the intricacies of the Irish legal system and the relevant laws, with practical examples where appropriate. The laws covered include copyright, defamation, privacy, censorship and publishing contracts.
1/2013-2014 Industrial and Intellectual Property LW356 Where intellectual property meets technology, students will learn about patents, copyright, trademarks and other intellectual property in an interdisciplinary setting.
2/2013-2014 Law and Social Policy LW114 This course traces the origin in the development of social policy in Ireland, noting that many of the changes witnessed in the last 50 or so years have been driven by international and regional bodies and laws. Implementation of equality legislation is evaluated in the context of different groups from a multidisciplinary perspective.
2/2013-2014 Art and Copyright LW801 This section of the course is offered to Masters students on the MA in Arts Policy and Practice in the Huston Film School. It does not assume any previous legal knowledge. Students are guided through the relevant corridors of the Irish legal system, are introduced to any array of various art forms which challenge the definition of art in the law. This dichotomy and tension is highlighted throughout the course.
2/2013-2014 English (and Welsh) Land Law LW398 This fascinating subject has developed reflecting social change over the past 100 years as it strives to keep up with the novelties of married women owning property, the rise in commercialisation of land, the growth in private property ownership and the rise in the divorce rate, all of which impact on policies behind land law.
