Biography

I studied chemistry at the University of Padova (Italy) where I received the MChem Degree in Inorganic and Physical Chemistry in 2000 and, subsequently, the PhD in Chemical Sciences in 2004. After one year of postdoctoral research at the same university, I took up a two-year Marie Curie Intra-European postdoctoral fellowship and, afterwards, a Körber Foundation postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Edinburgh (UK).
I returned to Italy in late 2007 and, after a short period as Senior Researcher, in April 2008 I was appointed Assistant Professor of Inorganic Chemistry at the Department of Chemical Sciences of the University of Padova.
In February 2013, I was appointed Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at the School of Biological and Chemical Sciences (formerly School of Chemistry) of the University of Galway (Formerly NUI Galway).
My research interests are within the field of bioinorganic and medicinal inorganic chemistry, with a focus on the interaction between metal complexes and biologically-relevant macromolecules in order to develop new potential anticancer and antiviral agents. Specifically, my professional experience includes the synthesis of coordination compounds (in particular Au, Pt, Pd, lanthanides derivatives) and the use of spectroscopic techniques (mainly mono- and multidimensional NMR, FT-IR and UV-Vis spectroscopy) to characterize the novel metal complexes and study their properties and reactivity under physiological-like conditions. My current research focuses on the design of: (i) metal-based anticancer and imaging agents targeting specific biomarkers up-regulated in tumor cells for the targeted chemotherapy and diagnosis, and (ii) metal-glycoconjugates as antiviral agents against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2).
I am coauthor of 44 papers published in international peer-reviewed journals (cit. metrics 2002-2023: times cited 3,389, h-index 27, average I.F. 4.371), 3 book chapters, 2 patents and 115 scientific contributions presented at national and international conferences, including 33 oral/invited/keynote presentations.
To date, I have supervised to completion 24 undergraduate, 3 Erasmus+, 2 MSc and 4 PhD students. My research group is currently comprised of 1 master's and 2 PhD students.
I am member of the Editorial Board of Recent Patents on Anti-Cancer Drug Discovery (Bentham Science Publishers), Molecules (MDPI) and Frontiers in Chemistry - Inorganic Chemistry (Frontiers Media), and I act regularly as a reviewer for journals published by the major scientific publishing houses.
I am member of the Society of Biological Inorganic Chemistry and the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC). I am also member of the Standing Committee of the Irish Biological Inorganic Chemistry Society (President since January 2024) and member of the Royal Society of Chemistry - Republic of Ireland Local Section (Secretary since 2020).

Teaching Interests

I teach chemistry-related subjects across the whole undergraduate programme (from 1st to 4th year), as well as at postgraduate level.
My topics range from foundation chemistry (BSc (Undenominated), BSc Biopharmaceutical Chemistry) to advanced inorganic and analytical chemistry (BSc Chemistry, BSc Medicinal Chemistry, BSc Biopharmaceutical Chemistry, Structured PhD Chemistry) within a number of modules, including lectures, tutorials and practicals.
I currently coordinate one 1st year Module (CH101 - Chemistry) and two 3rd year Modules (CH307 - Inorganic Chemistry and CH334 - Experimental Chemistry II (Inorganic Practicals)).
